DH wants the girls (2nd grade) to do a weekly report or narration on a book they have read. Is a book report basically just a written narration of the book? We haven't done much writing, what can I do to get them started? Would it be a good idea to start them with a form to complete, or just let them write what they want on a blank sheet of paper?

Thanks for your help

I would use a form for that age. Here are a few sites to look at:

Book Report Forms at ABC Teach (http://www.abcteach.com/directory/basics/reading/book_report_forms/)

Donna Young (http://donnayoung.org/english/bookrpt.htm)

Just to throw something into the mix. I don't see a blog listing for you but you can still do the same thing at Amazon. My daughter has started posting a once a week book review at my blog site. She has a blast. It is good practice for her and she enjoys when Papa (grandpa) leaves her a comment. We call it Buttercup's Book Reviews. She has only done it the last two weeks but she is already "planning" her next one. So I think she is really loving it.

Something else to consider.....
Trivium Academy recently suggested Evan-Moor "How to Report on Books" - they have them for Grade 1-2 and then above. You can see it online at Evan-Moor but they are currently updating their website and I couldn't get the exact link. You can do a e-download at E-M site and then just print off what you need.

My dd is reading soooooooooo many books that I think I'm going to start getting her to write on them too (something she's not wild about). Hoping it works and this book report bk is a good way to ease into it!

hth!
