I guess it would help with ds' reading comprehension.
I think I'll combine some basic strategies of IEW with narration.
Anyone try this with this young of a student?

I don't know but I'd like to hear about it too. So I'm posting to bump up this thread.
Thanks!

Well, you are addressing 2 different issues. First, for a rising 2nd grader I wouldn't be too terribly worried about reading comprehension if the child is reading on a typical 2nd grade level. At that point, so much energy is spend on decoding individual words that comprehension is often impaced. If the child is a fluent reader, I would focus instead on re-tells. That is the process of stopping and re-telling what has been read every few minutes. You initially start at 1 min intervals and gradually work up to 5 min retells. That is the easiest way to improve comprehension b/c it helps refocus on the content instead of the "reading."
As far as writing, again, unless your child is advanced, it is not the approach I would begin 2nd grade with. Copywork is a great 2nd grade approach. If the child is ready for independent writing, the idea of IEW and key words would be a simple way to develop imitative writing. However, a full-blown IEW......action verbs, which clauses, etc would probably be beyond many 2nd graders' grammar and writing skills. Typically, the end of 2nd grade or 3rd grade is the age for introducing these type of writing strategies.
Just so you know my perspective......I see k-2 as developing the basic skills of handwriting, mechanic/grammar skills via copywork, reading, and math. I see great value in copywork and teaching from it. Others have a totally different approach. :)

My ds did IEW SWI A in 2nd grade but I didn't plan it that way. I was doing IEW with my 4th grade dd and once I realized that ds was understanding everything I had him dictate some compositions to me. So a 2nd grader can do portions of IEW, but I think if you wait until 4th grade he'll get much more out of it.
We are just beginning The SWI A. The Key Word Outlines help with recognizing the main idea(s). You could start and just proceed until he couldn't go further...why not?
Just don't push...as far as reading comprehension: talking about what they are reading is usually more than enough.
