This is a new one for me, and thanks (?) to the ice storm, we have much more wood than we bargained for, now.
So...how do you stack/store, and what's the best location for it?
TIA.

Our wood stove is in the basement, and when you step outside the basement door, the wood is just above you, making it easy and convenient to get to. It is not however, easy to stack it under there, as you are bent over, but with the three of us (kids and I) working together in assembly line fashion, it gets done fairly quickly. It stays nice and dry under the deck, too.
I have a woodbox bench combo that dh built for me, as well as an old wooden crate that I use to hold the wood once inside.

We store ours under the back deck, but I do have one of those fancy wood holders in the living room.
As an aside, I saw your comment on my blog and I tried to send you an e-mail but Outlook hates me. I am so sorry for not getting back to you about NYC. I went through a really rough period and wasn't communicating with anyone. I know, I'm so mature.;)
Anyway, I was tickled by your comment and so happy that you were able to go and that you loved it!

I am *completely* heebed out by the critters that live in woodpiles. *shudder* SO, the big pile is quite a way from the house, stacked all nicely and neatly between two trees, but far, far from the house. This is wood that's pretty much standard size. It's not split, yet - any splitting we do before we take it to the porch. But it is all the right overall length before it goes into the big pile.
Then, I have a med. sized pile on the porch - the far side from the door (told ya I was a wuss), where DH stacks it for me (after splitting it and knocking it around a bit for me, to dislodge critters). That pile will usually last about four days.
The stuff in the house lives in a box beside the stove, and I only bring in enough for about 24 hours at a time. Unless it's fairly wet/damp/green/or-for-whatever-reason-could-use-a-little-time-by-the-stove-first.
The kindling goes in a separate box (we use a short wastebasket), and the kids can haul that around to gather kindling as they need to. It also lives beside the stove.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to be this much work, or this many steps, but I just don't deal well with finding a little woodborer or some other klingon eyeballing me from the wall first thing in the morning. So, um, yeah, it's worth the extra effort, to me. :)

They are definitely a problem where we are, so the wood pile is a good distance from the house. If you have it close to the house, the termites will first find the wood and then move on to your house. We have had too many neighbors have termites to take that chance!

Thanks, guys.
Critter problems are the main reason dh wants to store our wood *away* from the house...but I like your idea, Dy, about having a little pile, and bucket of kindling up close, and then the main pile further out.

We have the wood stacked in the pine trees on the other side of the driveway. We have a wood box the boys fill in the room with the wood stove. I have a large container of kindling (corn cobs, small wood pieces, and pine cones) on the deck and a small container by the wood box.
Here's a photo for you:

A firefighter once pointed out to me that if that woodpile close to our house ever started to burn, the house would go with it.
Now we have a few days worth wood close to the house and the rest a healthy distance away.

We go through about ten cords of wood a year, so we have a lot of wood to store! Most of it is kept in our garage, which is detached from the house. There are always 5-6 logs next to the wood stove ~ kept in a regular ol' cardboard box. Kindling isn't much of an issue here as our fire is going pretty much day and night, fall through spring.
