I don't know how long she was out of her cage, but she wasn't moving, she was covered in carpet fuzz, and I thought she was dead! I was getting ready to vacuum an area that hasn't been vacuumed in a while, so I was picking up things and she was underneath a bag. I was getting ready to wrap her in paper towels and put her in a ziploc baggy for her trash can funeral, then her throat pulsed.:D I rubbed her tummy a bit, and she started breathing more, then I put her in an isolation tank. Now her eyes are open again, and she keeps wiggling her limbs and rubbing her eyes with her front legs. It's like watching a tiny little baby move- so sweet, but so sad because we dont' know if she'll make it or not. Her name is Umbridge, and her buddy Trevor will be so sad and lonely if she doesn't make it.
Well, thanks for reading, I'll update if she improves or worsens.

This happened to us every single time we bought a newt. I think we went through 5 newts before we finally gave up. We made the tank as newt escape-proof as we could. It was really sad to see those dried up little guys. We studied amphibians last week and the kids were just amazed at how amphibians soak up water through their skin just like a sponge. I actually poured a glass of water on my 5yo's arm and then asked him if he was still thirsty. We all got a kick out of it. Hope your fire-bellied toad starts feeling better.

Well, I decided she may be better off in the tank with the heater, so I moved her to the regular tank with her buddy. When I reached in to get her, she jumped away from me, I think that is a good sign. Her eyes are WIDE open now, but she is just sitting in the exact spot I put her in.

That's sad to hear! The kids must be very upset! Dh found a yellow spotted salamander on the floor at his work in Sept and took it home to save it from the cold winter. He figured it would die since it was wandering lost in the warehouse!
Although they were scared of it at first, now dc's just LOVE the salamander. They check on it almost every 1/2 hour and delight in watching it hunt for crickets. They talk to "him" like he's a baby- and now he responds to their voices by raising his head. Dd6 has done so much independent reading about amphibians and learned more information about them than I ever have...
I'm glad I disregarded my initial reaction to just let the thing go outside! Now we're all attached to the little guy.

YAY! Now she is swimming about, and basking on their new "log". I think she'll be okay.

I hadn't even read your post when I posted about my frog trying to jump out of her tank.
