View Full Version : Umbrella Warning

Hi all -
Yesterday I spent the afternoon in the lovely pool/yard of a friend who had an umbrella like this one:
http://www.catic.com.au/USERIMAGES/OUM001B.jpg
Everything was great until a great gust of wind came up while I was standing just next to the base of that thing, and the whole affair toppled over, flinging the slab of flagstone that had been one square of that 4-square base - flinging it right against the back of my leg - SLICED IT OPEN. One trip to the ER later, I have 7 stitches, one tetanus booster and PRAISE that my tendon is still intact, and that it didn't happen to one of the MANY little kids who were also enjoying our "end of year pool party" in that yard.
So, if you are looking at or own an umbrella like this - consider some permanent cement or other arrangement - it's sort of dangerous otherwise. BTW the photo just shows ONE piece of square flagstone as the ballast for the base. Hers had FOUR pieces, one in each quadrant of the base, but still insufficient in the presence of a gust of wind. And still dangerous.

Dolly,
Hope you're feeling better. That's not a festive or enjoyable way to begin summer. Thanks for the warning.
DS received 22 stitches on his calf 3 wks ago. It's healing nicely, but still has to wrap it when spending much time on his feet.

I'm glad you weren't hurt worse, and hope that you heal quickly.
Definitely something to ponder over those umbrellas!

Those don't look so stable. I hope you heal in time to enjoy your middle-of-the-summer pool party!

OUCH! I do hope you heal quickly. I opened this thinking it was a warning about umbrella schools! (You might be a homeschooler if...)
That umbrella just looks like a bad design.

Wow! This sounds like a product that needs to be recalled. Or at least have a redesign of the base.
Hoping you heal quickly,
Jane
Wow, that doesn't look sturdy at all. Maybe someone should write the company and suggest they improve on the design so it doesn't happen to anyone else.

We have an offset umbrella similar to that one. It came with two holes that you could screw through to attach it to a deck. We tried that but that first breeze to blow knocked the whole thing over. So dh drilled two more holes and now all four "legs" are screwed down to our deck. This seems to be holding okay.
I hope you heal up well.

:iagree: I also agree with poster who mentioned a recall. I'm not sure what agency you would need to contact, but I would definitely report this. Others should be warned of the danger. I'm so sorry that it happened to you. Hope you heal quickly.

And due to your encouragement to "report this" - I filled out an online form with the Consumer Product Safety group. ;)

I would DEFINITELY do this. In fact, you might even suggest they pay for your medical bills!

I sure hope she's better - she posted this back in May of 2008. It is good to have a heads-up on that type of umbrella though.

LOL Hilarious Jean! I hate it when I don't check the date on a thread before I post!

2 yrs. later as I just found this site....but count me in the numbers of those who thought it was about an umbrella school situation. However, I wish the picture was still there as we are entertaining the idea of getting an umbrella for our outside table. Would like to stay away from the one that got you!

But my question is WHY would they spam an ancient thread about umbrellas?!
