I'm not sure for what grade it is meant*, but my 7th grade son has used it as a spine this year and it has worked out wonderfully. The title is The Western Heritage and it is from Prentice-Hall. It is a secular text, but very balanced. Includes snips of primary source documents and correspondence describing events or people of the time. Fantastic maps, event timelines, and paintings/photos. I will admit I haven't given much attention to the chapter questions because we are using it with TOG, but a cursory glance leads me to think they are well done.
*ETA: After further internet research I think this is meant to be a high school text, but my ds13 who is a strong reader, but not an especially deep thinker is learning a lot from it. The chapter questions do appear to fit better at a high school level (compare/contrast and other rhetoric type questions), but if you have a deep thinker or use it as a spine with another program like we did I think it fits well with logic stage.
