View Full Version : Hand lotion: What is truly effective and non-greasy?

I have tried various lotions over the years and have not been impressed. I have to be desperate to put it on in the first place, and if I endure its greasiness only to find a few hours later that it doesn't seem to be doing anything, I get annoyed.
What will work for basic winter-caused dry patches on my skin? I am desperate enough to go out and buy something (when the ice gets off our roads).
Thanks!

CeraVe is the best I've found. A dermatologist recommended it for my dd. It is a little pricey, but worth it IMO. Only certain drugstore chains carry it. I like the cream in a jar version best because it lasts all day, but there is a lotion version also. The jar version performs a lot like the original Eucerin in a jar, but without the stickiness.

I like shea butters that don't have mineral oil, or Walmart has something called Hemp oil lotion, which I like a LOT.

I googled and it came up on Walgreens.com. I have a Walgreens in my town (southeastern WA state)--are they likely to carry it? What chains carry it in your area?

Jordan Essentials (formerly Country Bunny) has good lotions and shea butters. Amway has a couple of lotions that are very good. I have also found a couple of Nivea products that were pretty good.

I got mine from Snyders. Try calling your Walgreens to make sure they have it in stock. The last time I purchased mine, I got the last jar of the cream and they had no lotions left. Apparently a lot of people stock up on it during the winter!

is use castor oil and latex gloves. Wear them at night for a couple of days.
Other than that I do love Dr. Bronner's & Sun Dog's Magic lotion. Of course, this is a local company to me, so I don't know of its availability elsewhere.

I use Oil of Olay - Original -active hydrating beauty fluid. It comes in a 4 oz bottle. It says to smooth on the face and neck, but I use it for my dry hands/ elbows/feet, etc.
I get it at walmart, but I bet Walgreens would have it. It might feel a little greasy for about 10 seconds, then it soaks in, and no greasy feeling at all! It makes my alligator skin as smooth as a baby's b-well you know the rest.

The best I've found is The Body Shop's Body Butter (http://www.thebodyshop.com/bodyshop/browse/sub_category.jsp?categoryId=cat20065).
It's a little expensive, but everything else I've tried it either too greasy, or ineffective.

Avon's Moisture Therapy is wonderful! I do not like anything greasy, but need something very moisturizing and I like my hand lotions on the creamy side. This also works great on dry feet. It is good stuff and sometimes you can get a good deal online.

I really like Eucerin. I don't find it to be greasy at all, and it's what the doctors I used to type recommended to their patients.

We use all-natural stuff now, but I always really liked Gold Bond lotion. It feels like it has the powder incorporated within, and it's nice and velvety.

I just remembered that DH uses Hempz lotion and it really is the best(not all natural) lotion I have ever tried. He abhors greasy lotion and he loves Hempz.

I am another that uses the original Olay lotion on my hands, as well as a bit of my face creams now and again. Hands show age so easily, I figure the anti-aging benefits will help them. When they are super dry I use Weleda Skin Food. It i really goopy but it soaks in completely in just a minute or two.

We love The Foil Hat's Shea Butter. It really does a great job on my dry winter skin, and it good on my dd's worse-in-the-winter excema. We use it from face down to foot. She makes it smell purty, too. :) And it is delivered right to my door- love that.

Curel lotion is the best in my opinion. You can get it at WalMart, Target, Dollar General, etc. It is non-greasy and just feels good.
It is the best. If you don't like smelly lotions, use the fragrence free kind. Just one application at night before bed will heal your hands. Seriously.
But it is a bit greasy. Until it soaks in.

and my standby is Gold Bond's Ultimate Healing lotion
It doesn' stay greasy like so many, and it lasts. I work in a hospital and wash my hands probably 30-40 times a day. My nickname from my Grandma was "Crocodile Hands" so I know about dry skin.
What I dislike about so many is either strong perfume smell that competes with my perfume or is just obnoxious and perpetual greasiness vs. short-term moisturizing.
This one seems to be the perfect balance for me and it is what almost every doctor and nurse I know at the hospital uses.............and the hospital has now started buying it as well since they've gotten so many requests.
They sell it at WalMart and most drugstores..........it runs about $7-8 for 5.5 oz

Weird name, but it is great stuff. I never heard of it until about 2 years ago.
Dh told me his Dad swore by it; his Dad was a mail carrier who was out in all kinds of weather.
Last winter, my dd came in from playing a few times with dry, scaly patches so bad that they looked like eczema. Just one application of corn huskers cleared it up.

I'll second the Avon! My fave is the Moisture Therapy Intensive cream, the kind in the jar, not the tube. It is very good, long-lasting, and holds up to a hand-washing or two.

I like their hand cream. Ds loves it too. Pricey but a little goes a long way. I buy the pack of small tubes and keep one in my purse, one in my travel bag, and one in my car.

I love the "miracle" line of lotions. The hand lotion isn't greasy and works wonderfully well (lots of aloe in it). It can be hard to find...but Bed, Bath & Beyond has it. Unfortunately, it runs about $10 a tube. But it's worth every penny in our house!
