Did you require your child to read The Prince or any of his other works?:001_smile:

Although he's an important writer, Machiavelli would not be a high priority for me at the high school level. I read him fruitfully as a college sophomore, as part of a Great-Books-style survey course on political science. The Prince is fairly short, so if I had a student with a burning interest in political philosophy, I might make an exception, but otherwise I'd save Machiavelli for college. YMMV!

My ds14 spent 3 weeks on The Prince as part of the TOG government elective.

We spent about 2-3 weeks on it as part of Quine's World Views of the Western World program. It ended up being one of my students' favorite books. Great discussion book.

My 10th grade son read The Prince and completed a writing assignment with perhaps seven or eight questions on the book. Maybe we are just a politically oriented family, but that book, with Hobbes Leviathan (excerpts), and the Shakespeare Bollinbroke plays have been the focal point of our discussions lately.
And what fun it has been...

Ugh--I have it, I intended that ds read it, but we never got to it (The Prince, I mean).
The Prince is an easy read in the middle school years. I wouldn't wait until high school.
Machiavelli also wrote on other subjects including republics and women.
The Prince is just his best known work. His other works are just as good.

Dd#1 began reading it in high school with TOG and has since read it a number of times just for "fun". She's now completed her first year of college in Honors Program with a declared Poli-Sci major.
I didn't bother to make dd#2 read it.
