View Full Version : When did everyone start putting their whole post in the title?

Please stop. Pretty please. It makes it extremely difficult for me to navigate a thread when this happens. Surely I'm not the only one? :)

It's not us, it's them. LOL

Most people don't put a title, they simply type a message. The administrators changed the character limit that's shown in the title line, so instead of cutting off the messages, it's showing the whole thing in threaded mode. Look for Colleen's recent thread requesting that they go back to the prior settings. :)

to use a title now.

If a poster does not add their own title to their post then their post goes into the first line that you read. I sorta like being able to read what a person is starting to say when I scroll through the thread listing.

There must be some kind of board problem going on. All the posts with no titles have the entire message where the title goes, when I try to read a thread in threaded mode.

Sometimes I have to keep scrolling right and left to be able to move down a thread, because the message runs right off my screen and the vertical scroll bar is at the end.

How can this be fixed?

that if I read the boards in Firefox, I have the vertical scroll bar on the screen to the right. the message stills runs off the screen and I have to scroll right to see it but I can at least scroll down without going all the way over to the right.

In IE, the vertical scroll bar is all the way over to the right.

Hopefully that made sense. Don't know if it helps though?

I thought it was so handy that we didn't have to type a title any more. In fact, with the threaded view and the "quick reply" option, I don't even see any place for me to try to put a title. I would have to click on "go advanced" in order to put a title! So I think that's what's happening to a lot of us. We don't have the title option; just a space for reply - and it's all going into the title line.....

You can see it on the admin board under user interface. I sent them a pm telling them about the problem - but they praobably were alreadty aware.;)

Hopefully they'll work out the kink soon. In the meantime - I'll try to remember to post a short title line as well.

Isn't this what old board users were complaining about--that they couldn't scan the posts as easily as on the old board? Seems to me this change would appeal to them. So what if the line scrolls to the right...just read the first X characters and move on.

here's a link where we were discussing this --tips on how to navigate and some hopeful resolutions :-)

To get to a subject line, click on Quick Post for the post you want to respond to. Then click Go Advanced. Then you get a subject line, and your post will be under the post you want to reply to.

I think this is a great improvement for this board, and it does make it a lot more like the old beloved board. Dare I say -- even better? -- because you don't have to open each response separately.

I hadn't noticed it as much with the new board. Guess I'm not very attentive:o

I had to go back to linear mode. And I never put titles, because that was one thing that was always hard for me on the old board. I really like not having to think up titles, but I'll put one in now.

Hopefully they'll switch it to some manageable amount soon, so it won't go all the way across the board if you don't use a title.

This is why I didn't understand the other thread about this: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2700

I can't scroll down unless I go all the way to the right. And even when I click on a post, I still only see *that* post. I tried both hybrid and threaded.

I see a "post reply" under you post, and a quick post reply" down at the bottom but when I click on that it gives me a dropdown asking to select a post to reply to.

That will take your cursor to the very bottom of the thread, to the Quick Post Window. Click Go Advanced, if you want to put in a subject line. (I think subject lines will make the threads more readable.) When you Submit Reply, your quick post will be threaded to the post you're trying to answer.

If you all would just go to the format the way this board was meant for, you wouldn't be having a single problem. None.

None of the problems you are speaking of, come up on my end and it's because I use the right format--the format the board was meant for, the format the whole reason the board was moved for. :)

It really is NOT that hard to navigate this format. It isn't. It just takes a bit of stepping out of your comfort zone and in no time, you'll get it.

I disagree with you.:) And as I've said many times, I very familiar with this format. It's not new to me.

Me or her?

Probably me. But even still, the format of this board was NOT intended to be like the old board. Never. That way is archaic and dead and obviously has too many problems.

Looking through the board the way I do--via the New Posts section-- All I see is people having problems and these are people on the "old way" format. Switching it to the right way will fix all of those problems.

Whether you believe me or not. :)

Me or her?

Yes, you ~ which is why I posted directly under your post.

Looking through the board the way I do--via the New Posts section... Whether you believe me or not. :)

That's your preferred method, but it is not "The Right Way". See, there's this nice little feature available with a format like this ~ the ability for people to choose how to view the board. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing your way didn't make it clear that I was replying to you (otherwise, I don't know why you had to ask). Viewing it "my way", there's no question because my post is a clearly a direct response to your post.

GothicGyrl
01-29-2008, 12:20 PM
Well, with my way, there's this nifty "quote" feature, which you've found, that is generally used to respond to a particular person.

And "my way" IS the way boards like this, are intended to be viewed. It's why they were designed to be the default, rather than the threaded view you guys choose. :)

But whichever. If you are going to use the other way, stop complaining. The other way is going to give problems because of how it is designed. This way was designed specifically to avoid those problems. :)

(we are only limited to 4 images, or else I'd give you oodles of smilies--we don't have a tongue in cheek smilie)

I see only 1 post right after another and all of the text is in the body. In other words, I only know if you are replying directly to someone if you quote them. I guess I need to play around with settings to see which way I like the best.

Yes, we have the standard format. The ones complaining have the format that mimics the old board. And like the old board, you can type in a whole paragraph in the subject line.

If you go to the top of the board, or even USER CP, you should be able to play around with the way the board looks.

And I could say that the threaded feature defeats the purpose of going to this board. :)

We could go back and forth on this one. But we won't. All I'm saying is that the problems some seem to be having would be fixed if they went to the right type of board. :)

At the bottom right of each message are some icons. The one on the far right is the quick reply. :-)

I don't care if the subject line goes over 10feet to the right....I just click in the window...and scroll down....I don't read all of the subject lines anyway.

If the board was MEANT to be read only one way....then that would be the only option...but it isn't so....THERE!!!!!!! :p

You're probably viewing the board in linear mode. If you switch to either hybrid (my preference) or threaded mode, you'll see a box that contains the first line or two of each post.

Colleen
01-29-2008, 12:44 PM
The threaded feature certainly doesn't defeat the purpose of this board; that's nonsense. There is no one "right" way to view this board, Toni, regardless of what you prefer. Quoting is great, but not always necessary. I use it when I'm replying to a specific element of someone's comments. Beyond that, there's no need to routinely quote.

You need to accept the fact that this format does allow various modes and that everyone does not agree with you (or me).
