My dd loves art, and we are using Hooked On Drawing, because it was recommended to me by the teacher of an art class which she took awhile back. But we have done nothing for Art History (except what was in Core Knowledge this year, but I won't be using that again next year).

So I'm wondering what you like for Art History that could be used for a 3rd grader. It doesn't necessarily have to have art lessons integrated, because I'm happy with Hooked On Drawing for that, at least for now. It's mostly the history component, and simply exposing her to great works of art, that I am most interested in.

Any recommendations?

Harmony Fine Arts next year for 1st and 5th grades. It gives several options for resources to use and it includes music appreciation as well.

Hope this helps,

Andrea

We will be using God and the History of Art this year. Haven't started it yet so don't know too much about it but it does look good and the program is meant to last 4 years starting with the Ancients so it would fit into Classical education well.

Well, one thing I use as my kids get older is Sister Wendy's Story of Art. While the book is great, the BBC videos are even better. We just watched the one on modern art yesterday and today and I simply love, love, love that little lady! I got mine super duper cheap at a library book cellar sale.

I will look into all of them.

And feel free to keep more coming! :)

Harmony Fine Arts (http://harmonyfinearts.com/) for music and art appreciation this year.

Here's a couple of other resources that I think look interesting -

Discovering Great Artists (http://www.amazon.com/Discovering-Great-Artists-Hands-Children/dp/0935607099/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210988559&sr=8-1) by Kim Solga and Maryann Kohl (perhaps more how-to than you're looking for, but a good book nonetheless.)
The Annotated Mona Lisa (http://www.amazon.com/Annotated-Mona-Lisa-Prehistoric-Post-Modern/dp/0740768727/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210988660&sr=8-1) by Carol Strickland. This is recommended by Sonlight. It has lots of good lists and period summaries, etc. I did find one comment that it had a few details about artists lives that were less than ideal, so consider that.
I also use the National Gallery of Art's Education program (http://www.nga.gov/education/classroom/loanfinder/). They have a good collection of videos and books and CDs on various art topics - technique, history, restoration, etc. I ordered a catalog online and placed an order for the whole school year. They mail them to me throughout the year and my only cost was media mail to return each item when I was done. I told them I was a homeschooler and they gave me a nine-month checkout on several reference resources. Pretty neat.

I am going to use Artists Activity Pack from Homeschool in the Woods. I received it free (I think for subscribing to The Old Schoolhouse).

Here's the link:
http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/AP/Artists.htm

It has information about artists, art time periods, different types of media, tools, etc, it has projects to "paint like the masters", and a file folder game with actual clip art of works by many artists. It has a sketchbook and pages to make a lap book of the whole thing.

I'm not an art expert at all, so this seemed to be a lot of stuff that I could never put together on my own. I'm looking forward to doing it with both mine. I'll have to see how to adjust, if any is needed, for the age difference.
