Burning questions in my mind:

What do you do with the food if years go by and you never need it? Is there some kind of rotation system?

Someone mentioned a portable toilet earlier, what do you do with the contents?

What kind of tools/gadgets do you think are essential that can also be useful if no major disaster ever happens?

Can/Do you store tap water in plastic milk jugs?

I have thrown out very little. Wheat, rice, oats, sugar, honey, salt keep almost forever (ok, a lot of years). Beans, oil, and milk don’t last as long, but we still manage to rotate them pretty well. I throw out a heck of a lot more fresh dairy and produce than regular food storage. Basically, store what you eat, eat what you store.

Porta-potty? :ack2: Sounds like an outhouse. Definitely my husband’s department.

Most of the “useful gadgets” are items we have in our camping gear. I like to be comfortable while the rest of the family is roughing it.

Yes, you can store water in milk jugs and soda bottles. Rinse well before refilling with water. You might want to add a few drops of bleach.

Some things you can store for 30 years. Others, we rotate. More info here:
