X-Post Good overview of world history for self-education ...

I have read and taken notes on the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, but really don't remember much from it. I would like to have a good overview of world history, but am not sure how to go about it. Any suggestions?

(P. S. I did not have any world history when I was in school).

I think history text by Spielvogel (recommended in the WTM) is wonderful. It is large (and in 2 volumes) but I found it at the used bookstore for $2-3 per volume. It reads very well and seems to be comprehensive.
