I have used Saxon 1 and 2 with dd7. Now dd almost4 is coming along and I was wondering if K was worth it. 1 was just fine for dd7 her K/1 year. Is K worth it?

I asked the same question a while back and the concensus seemed to be: Don't waste your money. Most kids would do just fine skipping it and going right to Saxon 1. I think the concepts in K were very, very basic.

We had a lot of fun with K, but if you think your child is up for 1 at that age, I say go for it. K does introduce addition and subtraction and graphing with the cute teddy bear counters, and I feel it helped my son not be intimidated by math because there was not a lot of written work outside the meeting.

Don't do K, IMO. Wait until your dc is ready for Saxon 1.

K is very relaxed, no writing. If you can practice counting beans, money, getting familiar with a clock, skip counting, days of weeks/ months of year, ordinal position, and learning numbers then you're good. I've combined K and 1 this year, and most of K are things that usually happen at home informally without even trying! I wouldn't buy it- just move to 1 if she can handle it.

My DD has a January birthday. Last year when she turned 5 I printed out the Saxon placement test just to figure out what we should be working towards. To my surprise she knew it all so we began Saxon 1 just doing as much as she wanted to whenever she wanted to. This year was our official Kindergarten year so she has to do some math every day. We're only about halfway through the book, but to me that's fine since she's still only K. We'll probably move into Saxon 2 by October or so.

For pre-K we used the Funtastic Frogs from RR and free worksheets from Learning Pages. DD asked constantly do do schoolwork and I quickly figured out that buying workbooks would run us into serious $$$.

Good luck.
