We just started SOTW 1 and are really enjoying it. I would like to add in some American history to our day as well. I know TWTM doesn't suggested starting American history until the third or forth year but I think a little American history wouldn't hurt anything. I need something that is inexpensive, or free.

Take a look at the book list for Beautiful Feet Early Primary. If your library has the D'Aulaire books, it could be what you're looking for. Another alternative is the Winter Promise American History Program book list, but BF is lighter and easier to do as an add-on. We've been doing BF this year and have enjoyed it so far.

Here's a curriculum that can be adapted to 1st grade. It's very similar to Winterpromise's AS 1. You don't have to buy all the books, just use it as a fun book list--and the internet sites are really good--we spent a while on the American Girl site and learned about American Indians.

There aren't many for that grade level. Only Native Americans and Living in a Plymouth Colony, but if you're kids like hands on crafty type things they are great.

I actually just made up something similar to the Our los Banos curriculum mentioned using History Pockets, DK's American history encyclopedia for children and lots of living books for my kids next year curriculum. They will be 1st/2nd grade and 4th grade.
