I am only afterschooling but I have decided to seriously use history in Spanish this summer as the spine of our afterschooling.

I am looking for resources that are appropriate for my 7 yo going into 2nd grade as well as for my 14 yo going into 10th. With my 7 yo I am planning on going slow and give her a solid foundation throughout the years. With my 14 yo I can't afford that, she is taking an AP class on European Civilization next year (15th century onwards) and I want her to have a good but brief background knowledge due to time constraints of what happenend in the world up to that point. Sadly her schooling has not facilitated that yet, although she has had quite a bit of American History.

I may use Story of the World to fall back onto, but I am looking for resources that are readily available in Spanish in the US.

Thank you so much, I am open to any and all suggestions.

Do you have the SOTW AG? I have used those with my dc. When I search the library, I check to see if any of the suggested reading is available in Spanish. You can do this with any reading list. I have had a lot of luck with this. Of course, it depends on where you are located.

I know that isn't exactly what you were looking for, but I thought I'd chime in.

Usborne has a few history books in Spanish. I also bought Enciclopedia Mega (Junior?) from Scholastic several years ago. It has an Usborne-style world history section, as well as sections on science, grammar (Spanish), geography, math, etc. Scholastic also has some US history books in Spanish.

I think ACE also has Spanish workbooks on history. I have an idea that they focus on the history of Mexico and Spain, though I don't know that for certain. These are designed to be school-type worktexts for 1st-6th grades, though.

For your 14 year old, I recommend "Historia Verdadera de la Conquista de la Nueva Espana" by bernal Diaz del Castillo.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. I will definitely check all of them out.

The Enciclopedia Mega Junior looks good and affordable although it might be too similar to El Gran Libro de Consulta pub. by El País/Altea that I have right now. It has a history section of about 30 pages covering up to 1994.

I also have another book which I might end up using as a spine entitled Atlas histórico universal, published by El País/Aguilar.

What I really like about sotw is the narration. It flows really well and it makes it very easy listening. The books I have don't have that flow, while they may be good sources they are drier and not so exciting because they are aimed at the general public and not at children.

I am planning on buying the Activity Guide for sotw and will see if I can find any of the readings in Spanish. I am located in Southern California, actually, not far from the Mexican border but I am too chicken to travel there due to the current instability of the region.

I have searched my county library's sytem for history resources in Spanish. I have found some online and I have requested my brother's help from Spain. He is a historian but is really busy at the moment having just become a first time dad... The problem I may encounter with recommendations coming from Spain is availability issues.

I am also looking into netflix documentaries. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.

I will keep you guys posted as to what I will end up using. Time is running and I need to be ready to start in just a few weeks' time!

Try the Chula Vista Library.

Also, there is a huge book fair going on in TJ right now. If you get up the nerve to cross. It is actually pretty safe, just across the border in a mall parking lot. It is across the street from Cecut. It is an area filled with families and high traffic.
