View Full Version : Has anyone ever done this for school???
Used the What Your _ Grader Needs to know as a spine? It seems to me to be a fabulous book full of excellent information.
I could add in some readers, United streaming videos when needed and print off additonal worksheets if needed as well.
what are your thoughts? this would be for a 10 year old

One HS's, the other afterschools. I came upon this series before I'd heard of WTM, and slowly collected them very inexpensively at Goodwill, etc.
I have read them, and noted the high points, and am checking into the K one every couple of months to see if there is any area I "forgot".
I'm glad I have them, but would not have gotten them new.

There are a coupl in our hs group and they call it Core Knowledge homeschooling and it's a lot like the Core Knowledge schools, I guess. There are lots of supplements for this approach online and I ~think~ there is a yahoo group. Maybe try googling for more info.
Have fun!

but I do like to refer to it. Every now & then I'll pull it off the shelf to make my kids are at least familiar with the concepts covered by their respective "grades".
With work on your part, I think you could use it as a spine. You might need access to a good library! And maybe some Evan-Moore books or something similar to have projects to go along with it?

I used this before WTM came out, and still use it as a reference, and in some ways as listed in an earlier thread about it (see if you can find that thread - lots of info).
It really is all over the place though - there are two different timelines going, one for World History, and one for American History. They are each chronological, but not aligned to each other. This works well if you're doing more of a unit-study approach, and keep world & US history separate. But if you're trying to line it up with a 4-year cycle, it is trickier.
Even with that, I like it very much and use it quite a bit, as a jumping off point.

I used it when my children were younger. I would use it along with various other resources. I did not use it as my spine per say, but back then I had not even heard of the WTM.
I probably will use it as extra reading in additon to our curriculum & not as our spine. Thanks for your input. :D

If you like these books and want to follow them for your hs, check out the Baltimore Core Knowledge lesson plans. They're very complete and would make a great base to work from.
