I have a copy of FLL, but have also noticed that GWG is used quite often also. Would someone please give a comparison breakdown of these two for me? Thanks!

FLL 1/2 is different in its presentation of information compared with FLL 3, so it would be more helpful to know which you are looking at.
I haven't used GWG, but FLL 1/2 is a cuddle-on-the-couch approach to introducing grammar concepts to children. There is poetry memorization, picture narration/ story narration, grammar ,and copywork (advancing on to dictation in later part of FLL2 and then in FLL 3).
FLL 3 covers all those same topics, but there is a student workbook for the student to be doing more writing out of their answers (vs. the talk-it-out style in FLL 1/2). FLL 3 introduces guided sentence diagramming for the students and there are optional activites in letter writing, dictionary skills, and oral language.
Hope this helps to at least give you some information about the two levels of books.

I'm looking at 2nd grade level. My dd is finishing up 1st grade in a Christian school right now and the only exposure to grammar thus far is nouns/verbs. She is reading at an advanced level.

FLL 1/2, as the prev. poster said, is mainly an oral grammar program. Very gentle and great for auditory learners. If your dc is one of those...she'll do very well. We've only used GWG 4 so I don't know how level 1/2 is implemented. You can look at samples on their website, though. FLL will have your dc memorizing the definitions of nouns, verbs, adj., adv., learning the list of prepositions, etc. There is poetry memorization, picture narrations, some copywork.
You might also want to look at Primary Language Lessons as it is similar to FLL but doesn't have your child memorizing parts of speech, etc. It does have copywork, poetry, picture study, more of an informal approach to grammar. Just another thought. PLL starts in 2nd grade.

I like FLL and so do my boys. My first son used it. The next year we had a move, the 2nd edition wasn't available, so he used the PACE for English. He placed right into 3rd grade easily.
We looked at Growing with Grammar samples and the FLL 3 and 4 samples, he wants to continue with FLL program. I liked both programs from the samples.

Is this also mostly oral, or is it a workbook format?

We did not like FLL 1/2 and I am very pleased with the GWG for that level. We are also using it for my 3rd grader and I have been pleased with it as well. They seem to be comprehending it much better and don't really need the teacher "interaction" that is presented in FLL 1/2. My guys get their copywork from Sonlight language arts, and they already do lots of narration/illustrations from SOTW and Noeo science so that is covered as well.
I would certainly recommend looking into GWG more thoroughly, I plan on continuing it as my oldest goes into 4th grade next year.

This is off my original topic, but do you do SOTW in addition to Sonlight, or is it included in their read-alouds?
And thank you for response on GWG. I will look more thoroughly into it before I make a decision.

We actually only do the Sonlight Language Arts (not their core) and are really pleased with it. We are doing SOTW as our own history study (separate from the Sonlight), I believe that the Sonlight for their ages (1st through 4th) does not cover the same time periods as SOTW.
Glad to help!

We used FLL 1/2 and then moved onto GWG 3. I love GWG compared to FLL and wish we had just started with it and skipped FLL altogether. In fact, that's what I'm doing with our younger child.

I've used FLL 1/2 and 3 and my son has LOVED the program. He loves the memorization, the diagraming, all of it.
We can't wait to start FLL 4.

:)We sat down last night with the copy of FLL that was given to me and started going through a few pages. My dd was so excited about it...it helps that she loves to cuddle up on the sofa with me. I think we will continue to work our way through it. If and when it isn't working anymore, we'll try something new. Thanks ladies!
