How does the "Mark This Forum Read" feature work?

I think I have a general idea, but want to be sure. Is this feature very helpful for keeping up with this fast moving board?

Using "Mark Forum as Read" does help keep track of where you left off on a particular fourm. Today when I checked in I noticed that all of the newer posts were bold type and then when I got to page 2 or 3 I noticed that the posts were light/unbold type, which alerted me that I had already browsed through those posts, so I stopped there. Very helpful feature, indeed! I'll use it from now on.
