My 15 yo dd has asked for a Money Management type class. She will be 16 yo soon and she shared with me that she feels that she needs to learn better money management and purchasing skills prior to getting her license and then thinking about buying a car.
My first thought when she said this to me was how insightful she is being. I was quite impressed. :D That emotion was followed very quickly with Uh, oh she is looking at me to fill that void.
She is not looking for an Econ class, they will be taking that at the local CC in a year or so. This would be an elective. I thought I saw something once on this board [well the old board] on Life SKills???? Life Prep??? Does this ring a bell for anyone?

That's very impressive and mature for a 15-year old. Good for her! I know in some high schools they use a Dave Ramsey program though the name is escaping me now. Maybe he has a homeschool version or it can be adapted. I just like his no debt principles.

My ds took a money management course as a co-op class from one of our local homeschool moms who has a degree in business/management. She used a Larry Burkett book; I think it was called Money Matters for Teens. Ds really loved the class!

I'm using Mondy Matters for Teens with my dd14 right now. She is definitely enjoying what she is learning. I plan to do another personal finance class with her before she graduates; I plan to use Dave Ramsey's couse Financial Peace for the Next Generation.

I think you may be talking about Life Prep for Homeschooled Teens.

I bought it this summer for my teen, but most of it doesn't apply and won't mean anything until at least 15-16yo, so I've held off on it so far.

My son used Money Matters for Teens and then Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace for Teens. Both are excellent.

Thank you all for your wonderful advice. Yes, It LifeSkills is what I was thinking about. But I am certainly open to checking out Dave Ramsey and Money Matters. I am glad to hear they both have such great reviews. :D

Abeka had 2 little booklets on personal finance that are part of a larger consumer math program. I used them with my ds when he was about your dd's age.

a book called Consumer Economics and Personal Finance. It's exactly the kind of book you're talking about. I bought mine from the McDougell-Littell website. In the book, it says you can view it at www.nextext.com (http://www.nextext.com), too.
My kids have both really enjoyed this book. The reading is light, the chapters manageable, and it speaks to the teenager, not the adult/teacher teaching the course. My kids have been able to do this course without much supervision. I've added in a couple of projects for interest.

My ds used both in his Economics class last year. Make sure that you get the edition for the older student. They have two, one for middle school student and one for high school. I accidentally bought the middle school one for my ds. However, he was still able to use it.

I like the idea of using the Dave Ramsey stuff for my kids. What ages would you all suggest for it? Definitely for my eighteen year old but really dd that is 12 is truly wanting something along these lines. Will she be too young?

I did purchase both the book and the workbook. The book gives you the why, while the workbook tells you how. I decided not to have my dd read the book, just do the workbook only. Every now and then, I have her read a particular chapter or section from the book. The book and workbook do not really match up, so if you want to use both you will need to schedule them yourself.
