I have read a few threads this morning on IEW and my curiosity is sparked by all of the talk. I will have a 10yr ds coming home from 1 year of ps, he was in 4th grade there. I am placing him in mostly 5th grade curriculum next year here at home.

I want to start him in a good writing program. It looks as if IEW is too good to pass up even at the high cost. But, I have no idea where to buy it (who sells it?), where to look at samples, and where do I start him?

Here's a link: http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/index.php?q=catalog/1/writing

If your budget is tight, then just purchase "Teaching Writing: Structure and Style" (TWSS) (DVDs and notebook all part of the package, I think). You can watch a sample video there.

That, alone, will get you started. I also purchased the Student Writing Intensive (SIW), which DS10 and I will go through over the summer, but I am already employing the TWSS techniques with him, with our history source texts. You can watch the first DVD (about 100 minutes long) on your own, and then START that very week with your child!!

We're new to it, ourselves, but it is already changing the way my ds looks at writing!

The best place to look at it as at a convention. Most of them have regional sales reps who are knowledgeable and trained in TWSS, SWI, and everything else. IEW provides excellent rep training;)
You can purchase it on-line through their web-site or occaisionally on the for sale boards.

Definitely buy it from the IEW web-site. You won't find it at a discount price and they have an excellent return policy. If it doesn't work for you, you can return everything and receive all your money back, including shipping costs.

I would just get TWSS to start with. I think it comes with a sample of the SWI series so you can see if you like it. (I have the older videos, so I'm not sure exactly what is on the DVDs.)

We did buy SWI, but I ended up returning it after a couple of months. TWSS is excellent, and more than enough for us.

Thanks for the info. Definitely going to buy from them for sure.
