My daughter has decided she possibly wants a career in Equine Science. She doesn't want to be a vet though. What other job opportunities are available in this field and have any of you had any experience preparing someone for this? By the way, she would be able to attend CSU (Colorado State University) at some point in the future (which is supposed to be the best Equine Science school in the U.S.A.).

Thanks,
Luanne

I own a horse breeding and performance training barn so here's a list off the top of my head. Keep in mind I am not familiar with the programs at Colorado so I don't know if all these would be applicable careers if she has her heart set on going to Colorado.

Equine business - she could sell equine insurance, manage a large breeding/training business, consult with farm owners on management issues, work for a large barn on marketing and sales, work for a company that sells equine related clothing in marketing, sales or design

Equine nutrition - she could work for a large animal products company formulating new supplements and/or food, work in sales and/or marketing for a nutritional products company

Equine law - contract law, sales, dispute resolution

Equine genetics - she could work for a large breeding program or a large vetrinary clinic that specializes in the latest fertility innovations managing a program, as a geneticist or a clinical worker

Training -she could train and/or exercise horses, teach lessons, work as a therapist in a hippotherapy setting helping brain injury patients, handicapped children or adults who have had strokes

Medical - vet, vet assistant, equine dentist (don't need to be a vet), ferrier, equine massage therapist, equine physical therapist

There are a multitude of areas where you can combine a love of horses and a career. I'd figure out where her interests lie - science oriented or non-science oriented and then go from there. My list is obviously not comprehensive, but just a list off the top of my head of the various people I have come in contact with in recent years. If you or she has any questions, feel free to email me!
