for a 4th and 5th grader. I'm looking for something interesting that I can just add additional readers to. Would SOTW 2 be good for these ages or would it be too elementary? Any other ideas?
Thanks!

I think SOTW 2 would be fine for those grade levels. SOTW 2 is used in SL Core 6, which is used w/grades 6-8.

Suzanne Strauss Art's Early Times The Story of the Middle Ages is a great spine. It's more a middle school level but I think easy to adapt to a lower grade. Amazon often has it used.

as spines for the older elementary crowd. My 7 ds preferred SOTW 2 but my 9 dd preferred Story of the Middle Ages. The narratives are longer, with more detail, more involved vocabulary and advanced writing style.
You can read several samples from the website. They even have suggested literature to read after specific chapters of the spine.

I like the Suzanne Strauss Art books also. Each chapter has questions, ideas to think about, and projects...if you're interested. She also suggests supplementary readings. The Story of the Middle Ages has a timeline, little maps, drawings and photos throughout.

I either use Miller or MOH, or maybe both! But SOTW is fine, too--esp if you add in readings from Kingfisher (I know you said just one spine--sorry!)

either SOTW or Christine Miller's Story of the Middle Ages. Christine Miller's book has a large bibliography of extra reading (both fiction and non-fiction) coordinated with the chapters so it may be a good choice if you don't want to do a tremendous amount of planning. SOTW also offers extra reading assignments if you purchase the activity guide but the suggestions may be too young for your children. Angela

We just wrapped up a year with SOTW2 plus extra readings, with 4th and 6th graders. We started the year with MOH2, but it quickly tanked. Not having the time and inclination to start researching new programs, I pulled SOTW2 off our shelves. We added quite a few extra books, both longer picture books (d'aulaire, Diane Stanley) and novels. :)
