while dh & I were out (at court for our foster son's TPR :001_smile:) said boy took off his pull-up and eliminated while sitting on the couch. Urine forcefully pushed into the cushions of the couch.

Now I wasn't there, but I discovered this while sitting on the couch watching Farmer Wants a Wife . . . the wafting smell of urine wasn't coming from the barnyard on my TV screen. :001_huh:

So I'm spraying it with Basic G (from Shaklee), scrubbing and sucking it all up with a shopvac. Sniff, sniff, sniff -- not too bad.

Wait! Now it's dried and it reeks again of pee. What to do?

You could try dampening the area with warm water then applying a thick layer of Borax. Let it dry completely then vacuum.

This worked well for us on carpet and mattresses when we had a bedwetter.

Good luck!

You might try spraying the area with a mix of vinegar and water and blotting with a clean cotton rag. Initially, the vinegar smell is strong but it does fade ( you can also add a sweeter smelling essential oil to the mix). After applying the vinegar and water, follow up with a bit of of Febreeze spray.

HTH!

No way to wash the cushion?

maybe get it wet and try some baking soda to rid of the smell?

or an excuse for new couch? ;-)

I can't get the smell out of the carpet...so for now the boy's room stinks until we need new carpet.

You might try vinegar/water solution. I've used that for a doggie urine accident on the carpet. The other is this product called Kids 'n' Pets Instant All-purpose Stain and Ordor Remover. I think it has enzymes in it that are good for these kinds of things. I've used this too after many a stinky carpet related accident with pets and kids ;). I've found it at grocery stores.

Bac-Out or Nature's Miracle.

I'm going to ditto that you need an enzyme cleaner like bac-out, kids n pets, etc. Check both the pet and carpet cleaning sections of whatever store. These cleaners use isolated bacterial enzymes that "eat"/break down the organic molecules that make the stink (and discoloration if there still is any).

Agreeing with Michelle and Nmoira. Similar to Nature's Miracle is Simple Solutions. Whatever you get, it must have enzymes. I don't know anything about Basic G; you might want to check the label. If your grocery store doesn't carry this type of cleaner, go to a pet store. Follow the directions--it may direct you to saturate the area, and then allow to dry for up to 1 or 2 (?) weeks. So far this stuff hasn't failed me; I have experience with dog urine as well as barf on carpets and dog crate blankets.

From what I've read elsewhere, your shopvac first aid was a good idea. I think you have a good chance for a successful outcome. (Ignore this if the new couch idea is beginning to sound good.)

We buy a solution that is sold for pet accidents. They claim that as long as it can soak into the area that has been affected, it will eliminate odors. I drenched a cushion with this once, let it sit for a long time, and then blotted up as much of the solution as I could. Then I set it outside (out of the sun) to dry in the summer wind. It always had a faint odor of the solution, but not of the pet.

FWIW,

Oxyclean and Nature's Miracle work for cats and dog. They should work for boys too.

Perhaps a new couch. We are moving and this couch was a Salvation Army pick up . . . maybe it's just not worth the effort. Hmmmmm, maybe I should wait until he's done potty training. :001_huh:
