I have Microsoft Word 97 and don't have a converter for an art lesson a friend set me that I need Friday for co-op. I think you have to have MIcrosoft Word/Office 2003 or newer to have the converter. She just left to go out of town, before I could call her to tell her I don't have Works ~
Just a shot in the dark!
Actually, there is 3 docs ~ she scanned one, which I got and the other three pages were Works. You may enjoy having a copy of the lesson yourself for your trouble. One is for an edible color wheel and the other of drawing Da Vinci upside down.
Thanks ~ Debbie

What happens when you try to open the Works docs in Word?

Well, I can't tell you right now because I just reinstalled Office to check for missing files, and it won't let me get to Outlook Express now!

OK, I got Outlook fixed ~ It's telling me file format (Works) is not available.

Are you trying to open the file from within Outlook?
I would save the files to a location on your computer, open Word, click File|Open and browse to the file.
What happens when you do that?

Well, I did save in Documents and tried opening that way. It won't let me open, so I browse and have tried some other things, but, since it's a Works doc. and I don't have Works, it won't open for me.

Drat. Sometimes Word surprises me by opening files anyway.
I don't have Works, so I can't convert for you. Sorry.

I also have an older version of Office, and I occasionally get a doc that I can't open.
I've had great luck with the Word Viewer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657CE88-7CFA-457A-9AEC-F4F827F20CAC&DisplayLang=en).

WEll, thanks anyway. I may have to just break down and go buy and update my Word/Office.

The Viewer I posted is free to dowload. Maybe you can try that first.

OK, Chrissy, how old is your Word? It says compatible with 2000 and newer?
