So we are planning an "Ancient Greek Day" here in the burbs and not only are we attempting an Olympic day, but we are also trying to cook in an authentic Greek manner. I have done the usual Google searches for recipes, but I have not found too many I am overwhelmed with--or that the children will be overwhelmed with. We have Pasteli (http://greekfood.about.com/od/candy/r/softses_pasteli.htm) and another for a roast chicken with lemon, olives, garlic, and olive oil, but we would like something more. Do you have any ideas for recipies? It must be as authentic as possible and as "ancient" as possible. :)

Thank you in advance for any ideas!

How about pastetsio, a yummy macaroni dish, and the usual olives, figs, hummus, breads or go right for the lamb! If you are dressing for the party garbage can lids make good bases for shields and cover those bike helmets with all kinds of foil! Have fun.

Well, don't know how authentic it is, but this is a recipe from "Ancient Greece: Come and Discover MY WORLD (http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Greece-World-Peter-Chrisp/dp/1587280663/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210131160&sr=1-1)" by Peter Chrisp.

"Serves two people

Let's make an ancient Greek dessert

Find a large carton of plain yogurt, honey, 20 oz. (50 g) nuts, plastic bag, string, rolling pin, spoon, and bowl.

1 Put the nuts into the plastic bag. Tie the bag with some string. Crush the nuts with the rolling pin.

2 Pour the carton of yogurt into the bowl.

3 Dribble a few tablespoons of honey on to the yogurt.

4 Untie the bag and sprinkle the crushed nuts on top.

5 Now your delicious dessert is ready to eat!"

BTW, the illustrations show them putting the honey on top of the yogurt in a swirl pattern. Sounds like a simple, but potentially tasty, recipe.

Have fun w/ your Greek activities! Sounds like a lot of fun!

Sure, sure...Make those of us homeschool moms who never do a single hands-on activity look bad! Can we come over? One lo-o-o-ong day of driving should get us there...:D

You made me giggle out loud. :tongue_smilie:

Come on over! It would be a long drive, but it would be worth it! :)

It's the sauce on gyros but it great as a dip too.

Mix Yogurt (plain), cucumbers (seeded and grated) and garlic

Sometimes I strain the yogurt (through a coffee filter) so it isn't so runny. It's amazing how much whey will drain out of regular yogurt! Try to drain some of the juice off the cucumbers after you drain them too. If you don't do either of these, it will still taste good but will drip all over.
