My tenth grader is sick with a bad cold- he is coughing badly and has been all week (he is learning that all important lesson about taking care of yourself). In spite of this, he went to school (part-time enrollment- 4 classes) all week, as it was finals week. He was just beat last night.

He then got up at 4:00 (as did I, yawn) this morning and went to a speech tournament. Dh, my dd and I drove an hour and a half each way to watch his 3 rounds. He just called me- he took first place in Humorous Interpretation!! He really was head and shoulders above the other competitors, if I do say so myself. He just nailed it. This means he is going to State!!

His goal is to make it to Nationals either this or next year. I am so proud of him. It took a while for this kid to find something he was really good at, and it has been so much fun to watch him. He really is a fine actor and public speaker.

Just wanted to brag- I am so proud of him- he could have begged out of things this week (in the past, he has missed school because of a cold- he just really doesn't function well), but he didn't. He feels he aced his finals. He also could have stayed home from the tourney, as there is another one next week, but he didn't. I am headed out to meet the team at Denny's soon- we will celebrate with the whole team, and then tomorrow, he can sleep the whole day away if he needs to.
Thanks for letting me brag!!

Wow, wow, wow! Brag away--you've earned the right! Congrats to you and your DS. He's learned some lessons in persevering and "pressing in" this week that will be valuable to him the rest of his life. And, yes, I would let him sleep aalllll day tomorrow, and maybe Monday too if that would help him recover.

Too funny. Nope. I don't think so. I was so shy and quiet, that I FAILED the one mandatory speech and debate class I took. :p
Hard to believe, isn't it?!

Oh. My. I have more! The Boy's speech teacher is taking him and three other students to Stanford for a special advanced tourney. She told me she is only taking the best of the best. How cool is that?! The other cool thing is that ds has been working for his dad and I on the weekends doing extra chores, like splitting wood, scrubbing walls and ceilings so I can paint, etc. This extra work will cover the cost of his airfare and hotel in Cal.

Now the hard part will be me letting him go, and not freaking that it is going to be him and 2 other Fine Young Men alone in a hotel room. Eek!

Thanks for the well-wishes- I will have him read them when he wakes up- at this rate, Jean, it just may be on Monday!!

Wow! That's terrific! The best of the best!

I'm with you about being a little freaked out about three boys by themselves in a hotel room, though. Can you call ahead and have adult movies blocked from the room? That might help a little.

My 13 yo ds won first place for his age group at a 4-H public speaking event this weekend!

He would like to tell your son:

"Congratulations!! I'm happy for you!"

And he's otherwise speechless (pun intended!).
