Hmm...I don't use AO but I do have multiple kidlets who are very close academically. Hoping this will bump up your post.

It really depends on the subject and the strength & weakness of each of my older boys. When they were younger, I was able to combine more subjects. Now that they are in the Logic stage, I've only kept them together for Latin, Greek, and Classical Writing. Math & grammar have always been separate because of their different strengths. I use to combine history & science, but I now that these subjects are more independent, I've found it easier to separate them too.
My youngest will always be alone because of the age difference. HTH!

My youngest (of 2) followed along with DD until this year. In other words, I combined them in many subjects. This year we took a break from SL and did Ambleside 1 and 3. I thought I'd be overwhelmed with reading aloud, etc. However, it worked out very well to have each child working at his/her own level. I had thought I would keep them combined forever, but my little Ambleside experiment convinced me to separate them. Next year, which starts in 4 weeks, we'll be doing SL 3 and 5.
I think the reading in Ambleside is pretty challenging, so you might consider putting them in their own years...I know this messes up the history continuity for some of them, but it will come around again.
