I have a 6yo ds who wears glasses - has had them since he was 4.5yo. It's the same pair, which is truly amazing to me. My SIL's son (my nephew) got his glasses at the same time as my ds (and they are 10 days apart in age) and has gone through no less than 5 pairs of glasses so far. So I really do feel fortunate.

However, the screws in these glasses continuously fall out! So yes, they're the same pair, but I feel like I am always at the Dr. getting them readjusted or having new screws put in (because when they fall out, they are somehow immediately stripped).

We were just there (at the eye Dr.) yesterday to have them re-adjusted after my ds had an accidental run-in with another boy at the gym. They even put in new screws (or so the lady told me). Tonight, another screw fell out and we have no idea why. They are closed tomorrow and Monday making them unwearable until I can go back to the Dr. on Tuesday. It's becoming embarrassing, though it shouldn't be because ds isn't doing anything out of the norm to his glasses.

Do you find that you're having problems with your young dc's glasses too? Has anyone found a good brand that is truly child friendly? I think at his next eye check I would like to get him a whole new pair, but not necessarily from the selection our eye Dr. carries. They just don't seem child friendly enough. Anyone with any advice or BTDT experiences? Recommendations for a quality child-friendly brand?

Thanks!

I wonder if you could put some super glue in the hole at the same time they screw them back in? Just brainstorming here!

We've had good luck with the optical dept. at JC Penney. The glasses have been very durable. I do have a set of teeny tiny screw drivers that I use to tighten the screws on my ds's glasses periodically. I've never had to do this with my dd's glasses...I think my ds fidgets with his and loosens the screws.

I can't remember exactly what she used, but I do remember that on one occasion the lady at JCP put something clear on top of the screws on ds's glasses to keep them in place. For all I know, it was clear nail polish, but don't quote me!

Yup, I was just thinking that....clear nail polish on top of the screw. As one who wears glasses, I have to ask, you have had his eyes checked, right? I also wonder if they are still fitting him correctly? I've worn glasses since I was 8 yrs old, and back then (WAY back then) they said I had to get new ones every year because my head was growing and my eyes needed to be in the center of the lens. Coulda been a sales pitch, though!

I'm amazed they still fit her! At that age I had new ones every year. The screws are not striping, the setting they screw into is striped. I agree that nail polish is a good temporary fix, However it won't last forever. You are going to have to get new glasses. You can get replacement screws in a little kit to keep at home. that will cut down on going into the office.

My daughter has had glasses since she was 2.. She is 11 now..
This past year she had to move up to the pre~teen section.

I would say if you can afford it, get him new ones http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/cool/cool0017.gif (http://www.allboxingstats.com/)

Yep, both of my girls moved to the smaller adult glasses this year, and it was harder to find any!

What do they say at the optician about the screws? It sounds like time to get a new pair soon, anyway (mine end up having to get a new pair each time they ahve a major growth spurt every year or so.)

The first pair were Ray Ban frames and they were great. They never needed adjustment in the entire year he wore them.

His current pair seems to need adjusting every other week. Makes me nuts. I am not sure what brand they are. I know they are not Ray Ban.

Both pairs have titanium frames which seem very strong and forgiving.

My dd7 got hers at 2 1/2. We get her a new pair every year. WHATEVER you do DO NOT get plastic frames!

I have had glasses since I was 18 months. Anyway, when I was in High School I had the same problem with the screws. They put a nut on the other side, and the screw never came out again.

Don't use super glue unless you never want to get them back out again. My daughter has had glass since about 5 & we get new frames every year. We always go metal, but sometimes we have had the frames break within the year, but they are under warranty. Her prescription usually changes and they send the lens out to be made, so for us, it's just easier, then she doesn't have to go without her glasses for a few days, or how ever long it takes to get them back.

We had some success keeping screws in when my dh super-glued them in. He has a small screwdriver set (cost less than $5, I think) that he keeps for tightening eyeglass screws. Here's what he did. He put a tiny bit of super-glue inside the hole. He said to use a pin to do this. Then he put the screw in with his tiny screwdriver.

The optical shop warned us not to try something like this, but we were desperate. (These were my glasses!) Worked very well.

Well, you've gotten more mileage out of these than I've ever heard of LOL, but if you want to try to continue with them (his head hasn't grown too big for them?) then maybe ask them to use lock-tight on the screws when they replace them. They may already be doing this. It may just be that the holes the screws go in are so worn out that they can't put a large enough screw in there to hold.....

Good luck!

getting ours fixed. Our boys started wearing them at about that age. Always broken.

My son is 9 and he's been wearing glasses since he was 3. He's had three pair of glasses. Only one pair was broken and the other pair he outgrew.
The borken pair came from a chain eye glass store. I bought the other two pairs from a local optician who warranties his product for 2 years. This is a optician only. No eye exams offered in the place.
He's never lost a screw. He's always had the Lock-tight put on them. Now my glasses....I lose screws every 6 months. But foolish me didn't get my glasses from the same place.
