This is for kindergarten aged kids. I know some call for you to start later, so tell me what that age can handle, (from this list that is....). Thanks so much!

We started SOTW ch. 1 today. My dd is in kindergarten, but we've started first grade work. She absolutely loved the narrative and could answer the review questions from the study guide. I was impressed. If you get the study guide, it has great project ideas.

Tapestry of Grace, My Father's World, or Story of the World.

SOTW. If you are starting in Ancients you get to do cool stuff like mummify a chicken. (If that is too gross, you can google mummify and there are lots of choices, including mummifying an apple!)

I like SOTW b/c it is simple and for youngers, not too much.

Used it with all 3 kids. The boys were preschool and 1st grade when it came out (I think). I am waiting until 1st grade (technically next year for dd) though she could have easily handled SOTW 1 in preschool or K. She was too busy with other things and I didn't want to have to explain wars to her in 1st or 2nd grade because she is very sensitive about death.

SOTW is the only one of those we have done. I like it okay, but would not do it for a K'er. It bored my dd to death in grades 1 and 2. My dc like it better when they are older. My guess is that has more to do with their readiness to learn about history than anything.

Tapestry of Grace, My Father's World, or Story of the World. This is for kindergarten aged kids.

My preference (Sonlight) isn't on your list, so I'll have to go with My Father's World. I haven't used it, but from what I've heard, it would be the most suitable for kindergarten-aged children. ToG is best reserved for older students, imo. And while we enjoy SoTW, I wouldn't dive into it just yet if I were you.

however, I have used SOTW with ds 8 for the past two years, while his 5 (soon to be 6) yo brother hangs on every word. He loves Greek and Roman mythology; Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar are his heroes; and he has spent countless hours playing out scenes from our Middle Ages history read alouds (especially King Arthur and the knights of the round table and Robin Hood) this year with his Playmobile knights and castle figures.

So while I didn't plan to include him in our history studies, and never required him to participate, SOTW has really captured his imagination.

but only if you do it very lightly ... it is pretty intense for a Ker. I plan on doing TOG starting in September for my Ker, and I am thinking of spreading our Year 1 plan over K and 1st grade. Our K year will be mostly read alouds and some fun activities to tie in. This way he is lightly introduced to history, and will be familiar with our set up already for 1st grade. :) Hope that made any amount of sense.:tongue_smilie:

Agreed. :) We used Ambleside Year 0 recommendations and Great Books Academy lists for Nursery and Kindergarten. I like to spend the first couple of years on famous people and famous tales. We're starting our chronological flow this coming year in 2nd. But I'm not doing 3 4-year cycles, so ignore me if you like. :)

Both of my boys, 9 and 5 love to listen to the stories. It feeds their imagination. I recommend the read by Jim Weiss too! They are well worth the extra cost.

For Kindergarten, I would just read the stories in SOTW 1 to them and some of the recommended books. Then in first grade, begin the narration/dictation work for the same (start back at the beginning). You will be amazed at what they can learn. My ds 5 listens to the stories when ds 9 does them (he is on SOTW 3). I never knew a 5yo could know so much about the discovery of America and Revolutionary War. I wished I would have done this with my first son.

I'd pick SOTW and add any of the supplemental readings from the Activity Book you enjoy or anything related you like from the library. I would definitly get the AB OR a series of related coloring books like Dover publishes. I think kids really relate with activites like that in K. Or even just drawing activites that you invent, ie color yourself visiting the pyramids or what did the pyramids look like while being built. Putting knowledge on paper seems to help. I also took alot of dictation from the K student that year to lable history drawings.

On the advice of a good homeschooling friend we stuck to early man (ie the first chapters in SOTW), Mesopotamia, and Egypt/Israelites for that year. That was our first year of homeschooling so my 2nd grader was on a schdual more like VP and the K student was on track. It was a great way to break us all in. I think our Nursery student will follow the same track on his own later.

I think in hindsight my kids would have loved TOG even in K (they love history) but there is lots to do and I think it might have pressured me more than them.

For K-4 (the first time through the 4-year cycle of history) I'd recommend SOTW and then pick up TOG for the rest. However, if there is a good co-op in your area doing TOG with young kids, I might go ahead and do the TOG with them. co-ops are great!

Not really. If I just had a K student I would do Winter Promise. SOTW was too much for some of my sensitive kids, MFW I never tried because I don't have library acces and the book basked might have been hard to pull off, and their reading program also didn't appeal to me.

I would not do Story of the World with kindergarten. I am not familiar with Tapestry of Grace. I thought MFW looked good. MFW tends to cover all subjects too.

I am starting my middle children on SOTW for 2nd grade (younger one will follow along but not really participate). We very loosely use the instructors guides. A kindergartener is not going not be able to handle it..that is not the issue. They just won't get nearly as much out of it as if you saved it for an older age. My older children started homeschooling at 3rd grade and it was perfect for them. I am starting it earlier with the younger children, but we have the CDs and can listen in the car so that part is no work for me. Then I just pick activities here and there. I am not so sure a kindergartner could handle the map work.

My vote is for SOTW for two years, so you can do everything. Wish I had done it this way with my son, but thought it would be too much for him. In hindsight, he loves being read to, five year olds can color real nice, and you can save the map work for the next go round, if you're in the four year cycle. I will be using SOTW 1 again in fifth unless I change my mind, so we can do certain projects- like the chicken mummy-with his full participation (I was just not comfortable with him touching raw chicken yet...)
