I have seen some references to a magazine called Calliope which has history-related articles and is written for children. Is anyone familiar with this magazine? And, would you recommend it to be used with history curriculum or just for pleasure reading?

I haven't seen this magazine myself, but we have had subscriptions to Dig, Faces, Muse, click and Ask (through the same publisher) here at one time or another. All outstanding magazines. It might be hard to co-ordinate issues to a specific curriculum, but if you don't mind your kids exploring topics "out of order" I bet it would be a great resource. Here's a link to the Cobblestone Publishing page. You can see samples of all their mags if you haven't already.

While we don't subscribe, we do get these from the library for use with history. They are well done,

We get it from the library to supplement history.

My kids would not be interested in a subscription to it.

We used to subscribe but decided to cut back on magazines so we just get issues of interest from the library.
Have you heard of Learning Through History Magazine (http://www.learningthroughhistory.com/)? This is my favourite history magazine because of it's interesting articles and resource lists. DD9 also enjoys it but it is far too advanced for DD6 and DD3.

Thank you all for your replies. It hadn't even occurred to me to see if our library has this available. I will check there first!

Arwena, the Learning through History magazine looks very interesting also. Have you subscribed to that one - or is it also available at your library?

We're going to look for them today!

I have a subscription to Learning through History Magazine and it has been helpful in adding to our various history studies. It seems to have held less appeal to my kids as a "pick up and read" magazine, though. I'm not sure why. Maybe because it has a more "formal" layout? It is a really nice magazine to pull articles from to add to a particular topic of study. And each issue has an "Early Learning Unit" for the younger kids at your house. You can look through a magazine sample at their website (if you haven't already.) I doubt you would find this particular magazine at the library, but I could be wrong!

We had a subscription to Calliope for three years. We really miss it. I need to remember to renew. Dd got it from age 8 to 11 and she enjoyed the magazine. I would take it once she had read it and file it away with the history books for that rotation. They've been a great supplement and enrichment to our history studies and it's always fun to unpack the next year's history books and revisit our old magazines.

Calliope. LTH isn't as busy and graphically distracting. It also includes study guides for historical fiction.

However, Calliope is often much more focused. For example LTH would have an issue on the ancient Near East. Calliope might have an issue devoted to the Sumarians and a second on the Hebrews (hypothetical issues)
