I would like to spend some time doing an afterschool "unit study" on sentence diagramming with my 4th grader. any recommendations on what curriculum I should use or a website I could go to?

Junior Analytical Grammar would be a great resource for this.

Rod & Staff teaches diagramming extremely well - we used it for all our kids and it was very clear and thorough!

these are some great resources! I'm having fun checking them out! Will definitely be getting something for summerschool. The best part is that I've been talking it up enough that all three kids are begging for diagrams!! Even dh is intrigued :D

I posted this yesterday in another forum...

I recently found these two sites with diagramming how-to: Sentence Diagramming (http://teacherweb.com/CA/MillikanMiddleSchool/Roth/photo4.aspx) and Guide to Diagramming Sentences (http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/diagrams2/diagrams_frames.htm).

I am new to diagramming, though, so I cannot say how much material these two sites cover and whether they can be used for a standalone unit study.

HTH in some way..

Excellent resource!

:iagree: 1000% (and I've looked at and/or used every program mentioned in this thread so far, except the Rex Barks book)

I asked this question on the Curriculum Board (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=243158&highlight=grammar) a few months ago, and the recommendation was Growing with Grammar. I've started with my kids, and it seems very well suited for afterschooling: brief lessons (about 15 minutes), self teaching if the child can read, and 107 lessons for the year. That means we can cover a year over the summer if we do two lessons per day, which is doable.

Growing with Grammar sounds very promising! I need something quick to use with my son. We are trying to do FLL but it is so repetitive he get's annoyed. And at this point I don't really need him to do the memorization.

growing with grammar looks pretty interesting. Where would I start though. If I have a 4th, going into 5th grader who knows no diagramming, could I start him out in GWG level 4 or 5 without him getting lost?

I don't really know, but I bet the people on the Curriculum board could answer that.
