I'm looking at the BJU math 6 teacher's guide to see how to go about doing the lesson. Well, it says to use the Home teacher packet and flip charts, etc. to teach. I only have the student book and teacher's book. I looked at a few lessons and the explanation for teaching the materials comes from using the Home teacher's packet, which was my understanding that I really didn't NEED that. Now I'm confused. How DO you teach BJU math? Do you just go over the student book and go from there? I'm not sure the purpose of the teacher's guide at this point. Help me understand this, please!! (pleading:confused:)

Given that you mentioned above that BJU 6 looked like review after Right Start or Singapore, then I would think you could probably just teach from the student book, and use the TE only if needed or for checking answers.

If you are using BJU only, and really teaching from it rather than using it as review, I don't see how you can follow the TE without the Home Teacher's Packet. (I mean, sure you *could*, but *I* wouldn't.)

We are using BJU6 after going through RightStart E. I don't use the TM for BJU.

We use the homesat system, but if you are going to teach your child personally you can do that right out of the student text.

You will need the TE to correct your child's work since the answers to each lesson are in there. I also refer to it when I don't understand a math concept or math term.

You need the Home Teacher Packet because it has number lines, decimal charts, math drills and manipulatives in the Appendix for some of the lessons. We haven't used the Teaching Charts or the Student Material (paper manipulative).

I also bought the BJU Press tests and answer keys, but you could probably use the review at the end of each chapter as a test.

If you teach out of the student text, you're only covering a small portion of the curriculum. I'd get what they suggest getting, even if you think you don't need everything.

The only exception to this, IMO, is the flipcharts. I'm pretty sure those are intended to be visible for the student who is across the room, and not necessary for the student who is sitting right next to you.

I use HomeSat, so my experience is different than those who don't; but having observed the HomeSat teachers, who teach right out of the TMs, there is much more to the lessons than what is in the worktext.

I am using 4th grade right now and used it for 3rd too - I don't usually teach from the TM unless my daughter needs some more explanation on something.
