What good is the buddy list for?

Someone else asked about the ignore list... I'd like to know about the buddy list. What exactly does it accomplish? It doesn't change the way anything is displayed. Are there features you can use with the buddy list that I'm not aware of? Honestly, I can't figure out what it's good for except to save a list of friends saved so that you can automatically generate an email to the entire list. Is that about it, or is there something more?

When, oh when, will I learn to search first?!? I just found a discussion about this from a couple of weeks ago. Please ignore this... apparently there isn't much to it except seeing who is online, being able to pm the entire group at once, and setting up your pm box to receive messages from buddies only. Sorry for the repeat inquiry!
