We have a few books already, but I haven't found one that I really love and haven't been able to pull what I have together. I would like to do a semester long class.

Thanks!

A couple off the top of my head:

The Yearling, Marjorie Kinan Rawling (a must-read; cracker Florida; best older logic students around 8th grade);

Strawberry Girl, Lois Lenski (for the young logic crowd; set in Plant City area)

War Chief of the Seminoles , a Landmark book

A Land Remembered, Young Reader Edition, Patrick Smith (I've only read the original edition; this is usually on the shelf at Barnes and Noble so you could preview)

Two of my boys will be in a book club this summer covering, among other titles, these books by Jane Wood: Voices in St. Augustine, Adventures on Amelia Island andTrouble on St. Johns River. I've not yet ordered the books so I don't know the grade level. The book club is targeted for rising 6th graders. The author's website is www.janewoodbooks.com

Hope that helps --
Lisa

P.S. I remembered another Florida book. Eugenia Price wrote a wonderful book called Maria, about a woman who lived in St. Augustine during its British rule. Her house is the oldest house in St. Augustine and can be toured. Though not distasteful, it is a romance and may be a bit much yet for your 10-yr-old.

The Barefoot Mailman, about delivering the mail from about Cocoa area down the coast to Miami area when it was all done on foot and by boat, very few settlers.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have A Land Remembered, but didn't realize there was a children's version. That would be good.

We've read Strawberry Girl and The Yearling. But, I'm looking into all of the others now.
