View Full Version : Do you ever puchase something way in advance
because you are afraid they might stop publishing it, or change it, by the time you need it? :o Like, say you use something with your 1st dc and absolutely love it, but your next dc won't need it for several years. Do you go ahead and buy it anyway, just to be sure you have it?

I do this. I figure with the way everyone keeps changing things that, I would rather stick with what I like. I am doing this with rightstart math, SOTW, and a few others.

funny you should say this! I just ordered cassettes today because the books I want are going out of print in audio format. There are no cds to be found - except used in "fair" condition.
So, yes, sometimes I do order way in advance because the books are going oop and I do not want to pay a fortune for them after the fact.
Sometimes I also buy in advance if someone I know is selling something I think I will need at a great price.

I just did this with Singapore Math. I finally found what worked and I was finding excellent deals left and right. Both dc are in 1B... I have everything I need up through 3B.
I was also afraid that I wouldn't have the money to buy it when they were ready... the rate my ds is working he may need 3B sooner than I thought!!
I don't usually buy ahead unless I find a great deal used, but I bought a year ahead in Singapore because I'm afraid that they will quit carrying the US version.

My kids did well with the Abeka elementary math. Therefore, I purchased all the worktexts in advance. I didn't want to be stuck replacing TM's when the update things. Lucky for me, this math program worked for all my dc.

I do this if the price is good. I figure that one of my 3 kids will use it eventually.

Guilty here as well. Right now my oldest is only 6 so I'm on the lookout for good prices on things for the upcoming years...I already have next year and the year after....

until a book I had wanted and was waiting to get went OOP! It was Art In Story by Marianne Sacardi. I'd heard the reviews here, I'd ordered it through ILL, really liked what I saw, but didn't need it quite then. I waited and when it went OOP, the prices for used copies were 3 times what the original price was and I wasn't going to pay $75 for it. Thankfully it came back in print, but I learned my lesson. If I *really* want it-get it while I can.

I have done this with TOG year 1. I won't even be using it for a year or two, but I have bought the books for all levels for unit 1. I figure I can read the higher level books to prepare myself for when dc get to that stage. I think I am just going to buy LG-D for the rest of the units, though and read through the D selections the 1st 4 years, then the R selections the second 4 years, unless I have decided to go with a Great Books Tutorial online by that time (like maybe Escondido Tutorial Service).

I went to our local homeschool store a few weeks ago and saw an Algebra 2 set. It was everything - student text, answer key, test booklet, solution manual (how to work the problems) and the DIVE cd all used for a great price. If it's still there, I will snap it up today! We won't need Algebra 2 until at least the 2009/2010 school year.

Yes, if I see something I really like. I have a number of high school resources already (math, science & history)!

I used to do this but have learned to restrain myself. I found that for every lovely thing that went out of print, half a dozen new and equally lovely things were published. :)
I still have some things on my shelf that we won't need for a few years, but my dw has made me promise not to buy more than a year or two in advance. (That amount was deemed reasonable because our dd is accelerated and sometimes makes sudden leaps that can leave us scrambling for materials.)

I do with reading books, not so much with curriculum. I do plan a year or two ahead and buy as I see good deals. I have purchased a few things for my own self-education with the idea I can use them for ds later.
