View Full Version : Yet another Latin question...Lingua Latina, Henle, Latin Prep...

I've been following the threads on these programs, and I am completely unsure which direction to take.
My dd 11 is finishing LC 1 this summer. It's gone just okay. We haven't liked the way you just memorize without really knowing why, though it has gotten better as we have stuck with it. I had thought about going to Henle with her with the Memoria Press guides. I had also considered Latin Prep. Then, I saw Lingua Latina, and I just really liked the looks of it. But I think the best approach would be Lingua Latina along with another grammar-based program like Henle perhaps. FWIW, I intend to work ahead in LL over the summer.
So, my question, what do y'all think? Henle or Latin Prep if wishing to combine with LL?
TIA,
Anita

My 2nd son was almost 11 when we started Henle 1. We had finished most of LC1, though it was quite imperfectly done. It did help in Henle though, and my sons liked Henle better because there was more translation, more "doing" in addition to learning the endings etc. Since I do have it to do over(with 6 more children), I plan to add in LL after Unit 5(I think that is the recommended spot). I don't know anything about Latin Prep.
My 3rd child did LC1 and 2 before starting Henle at age 10. If he had been older when starting LC1, I might have stopped at LC1 or maybe worked through LC2 quickly and then started Henle. He is in Unit 3 so we haven't added LL yet. I haven't found a guide necessary. I just have him work for 1/2 hour per day and I think we will get through it in 3 years, but with the addition of LL I'm not sure of how long it will take. My older two worked through Henle 1 in two years(they spent more than 30 min per day), though the pace was a little quick for the 11 year old(I suggested that he slow down multiple times, but he wanted to keep up with big brother:) ).
My 10 year old is not fond of putting pencil and paper together, so I let him to the Latin to English in his head checking as goes with the key. English to Latin he does on paper, but sometimes I do the writing for him.
Getting ahead is a great idea! I stumbled along, rarely very far ahead of my first two, but now with my 3rd, since I had been through it already, things are going much better.

I'm planning to use Latin Alive, the new program from Classical Academic Press with my 11 yo dd (who is finishing up LC2 now). A couple of the things I like about it is that the author has tried to include aspects that will appeal to both girls and boys (so less focus on military themes) and the program is written with middle school students in mind. So, it's a step up from the elementary programs (with their emphasis on memorization only) and it moves at a slower pace than high school programs. Latin Alive is visually appealing to my dd as well.
The program is being piloted and edited now and will be released in May. Karenciavo (from these boards) is using it now and really likes it. You can see samples here (http://www.classicalacademicpress.com/comingsoon.html).
ETA: Another draw for me: Latin Alive includes a lot of reading, along with the grammar.

I haven't used Latin Prep, but one advantage would be that their forms for declension follow the same order as those in LL.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I didn't realize that the Latin Prep forms for declensions were the same as LL. That's interesting because I have heard others suggesting changing the ones in LP to the way LC or Henle do them. Hmm, anyone else have any insight into this?
I'm still leaning toward Henle for who knows why...because LP *really* looks like fun. I guess I must want to torture my kid, no fun allowed. NOT.

You really can't go wrong either way. Both Henle and LL are top-notch. I've used both, and I think that Henle is a bit more rigorous, thorough, and certainly more systematic. However, that said, I tend to use Henle and LL for myself, and Latin Prep and LL for my children. Latin Prep is more engaging and interesting for them.

P.S. Sorry I couldn't answer your question. I just wanted to make sure you knew about Latin Alive since our dds are the same age.

Mama Lynx - are you saying that Henle is more rigorous than LL, or Henle is more rigorous than Latin Prep?

Sorry - I'm saying that I think Henle is more rigorous than Latin Prep (though Latin Prep is still plenty rigorous).
Lingua Latina is in a whole other category :) I just wanted to compare Henle to LP, to use either alongside Lingua Latina.

Thanks! That is what I thought you meant, but I wanted to make sure. :001_smile:
