....as far as being a pet....

Would it make a good pet?

Still reading about them online but I was hoping someone had some personal experience with them.

thanks

My nephew has one. He's terribly allergic to dogs, cats, birds, but not the hedgehog. He's 12 and has had "Spike" about 2 years -- maybe not quite that long. He's always taken care of it by himself. I don't know too much about their care, though. Spike lives in a very large old fishtank with cedar litter in it and several little "houses" nephew made for him. He comes out of the tank several times a day to be with the family, during which he wanders the living room (the door to the living room gets blocked off so Spike doesn't get lost). He's a remarkably affectionate little critter with nephew, but timid with others.

thanks Audrey - I've read interesting things about them and find it intriguing that those little prickly looking animals can be so affectionate. Guess they aren't very popular!

DD didn't fool with it much so we found it a new home. It was a sweet little thing, easy to care for.

I don't have one as a pet myself, but we do have one as an education animal at the zoo where I'm a docent. They are primarily nocturnal so tend to sleep all day. They are easy to care for, however. Ours eat insectivore diet plus cut up produce. You can see a picture of Bonnie and Clyde here.

Clyde has since died. He was pretty high-strung and we think he had a heart attack.

They're nocturnal, so like lots of little nocturnal critters, they want to be most active while you're trying to sleep - and you're bumming them out trying to unroll them during the day....
