Just curious. I am new to "afterschooling".

1. What type of results have you seen from afterschooling?
2. Which subjects do you afterschool?
3. Why do you afterschool?
4. What are your favorite curriculums that you have used for afterschooling?

BTW, I am afterschooling my 5 year old. We are currently finishing "teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons". We will start on Singapore Math Essential Math A & B. I am interested in reading to my 5 and 2 year old "The Story of The World." I am afterschooling presently to give my son an advantage once he starts ps. I struggled through school, and I want my kiddos to flourish/ love learning!

I am currently afterschooling my DD5 who goes to AM kindergarten. In the afternoons we do The Reading Lesson, R&S 1 math, and MOH creation to Christ. I am ASing her because she is beyond the work they are doing in K. She could easily have skipped kindergarten altogether but with her summer birthday, she is already on the young side for K, so we are looking at her K experience pretty much as a year to mature before starting HS 1st grade.

I AS because I don't want her to regress this year while she is in school. If she were to not keep working at her level at home, she would quickly forget how to read. She sits in on history because it just sort of worked out that way and she enjoys it. I could probably drop the math entirely but I feel it helps to reinforce what she is already doing in school.

We do schooling before school in the mornings and a little carschooling on the ride home (listen to a portion of Story of The World).

I think it helps becuase we practice the basics- Reading, Writing, Math Facts.

We use a variety of things (my daughter is in first grade Montessori School) but we do use "two plus two is not five" for math facts, Reading is maybe a page or two out of "Reading for the Gifted STudent" and I also have the same workbook for math. IT just depends. I could very well just write out 3-4 math problems on a whiteboard and set out her montessori materials.
Best of luck.

Aly.

1. With afterschooling, you get out of it what you put into it.
2. We afterschool the subjects the school is weak on or chooses to omit a large number of units.
3. The reason we afterschool is to provide the children with a quality education despite the barriers the district erects.
4. Fav curr: Singapore Math, Dolciani et al Algebra...

We don't find afterschooling gives a huge advantage in public school. The testing these days is just for minimum competency, so on paper everyone looks the same - either failing miserably or passing with flying colors. There is no differentiation available in preK-6 for those who test over grade level; they'll still do the grade level work. (had it been this way when my boys started, we would not have used public school). Honors selection heavily weights the teacher recommendation, so it's quite possible for a nonminority child who does not have teacher pleasing behavior or an auditory learning style and does has a 90 or better gpa and scores in the 90-th or better percentiles on the PSAT or SAT not to even be in the honors program....seats are quite limited compared to demand. We find that the honors program isn't even worth it academically in some cases...sometimes the classes will actually be easier than reg ed due to the number of political placements; far better for learning to be in reg ed with a passionate, knowledgeable teacher. Either way, afterschooling is necessary. Just my two cents...caveat emptor.

I'll answer #2 first. I afterschool(ed) reading. We used Hooked on Phonics and later added Phonics Pathways. I also use Kumon and Singapore Math.

#1 - My son is now a really advanced reader and does great in school.

#3 - Why? Well I read the blogs "Why Boys Fail" and "Kitchen Table Math". It was apparent to me that some boys don't become readers in Kindergarten or First Grade and that could be a downward spiral. So to prevent that I made sure my son could read. After reading Kitchen Table Math I learned that some public school math curriculum is deficient so I picked up Singapore Math.

#4 - I like Hooked on Phonics, Phonics Pathways, Kumon and Singapore Math. We also use the Core Knowledge series "What Your First Grader Needs to Know" etc.

More than just curriculum we do try to make it a way of life. Going to the library every week, reading great books, reading about history and science, going to museums, and watching educational DVD's and PBS have really helped my son at school.

1. My kids are very confident in math and move to a higher grade for math class at school. They love to read a wide variety of books. When we go to museums, etc. as a family they seem to understand the context of the exhibits. The net result is vacations are more fun and parent/teacher conferences are almost always positive.
2. Right now, DS (10) is doing MathWhizz (online), reading about ancient Greece, piano, and keeping up with his homework. DS (8) is doing MathWhizz, Math-U-See, reading about ancient Greece/Rome, piano, and the Michael Clay Thompson for Language Arts - she doesn't have much homework.
3. I afterschool (really before school and on Saturday morning school) because I love the idea of classical eduation and want both kids to have strong math skills. I think the math curriculum in both of my kids schools is mediocre.
4. I really like Math-U-See for k-5 as it seems very thorough, logical, and easy to teach. My daughter and I are enjoying MCT language arts at it is wonderful to cozy up together. She loves to write  and we chose the curriculum together as she wants to become an even stronger writer.

Good for you! Your kids (and your public school) will thank you! That's just what we did and it is truely paying off, in more ways than I could guess. My dc loved SOTW at those ages.

1. Dc are both at the tops of their classes; Traditional math methods and fundamentals are cemented before dc's introduction to our district's "fuzzy math" methods.
2. See signature below. If I could only do one subject at home...It would have to be math and history - I'd find a way to do two.
3. Poor public school curricula and results.
4. Saxon Math, First Language Lessons

My dd is also 5 and attends PM K at a public Montessori school. I "beforeschool" because we started doing it before she started school. She liked it and wanted to continue. We had initially planned on hsing (and perhaps still will) and I want to know where she's at progress wise at all times. We use OPGTR and Rightstart math games. She loves them both and I have found both to be very effective. We also do read alouds from Sonlight K and Ambleside Online Year 0. You can find our read aloud list here (http://enchantedschoolhouse.blogspot.com/p/2010-2011-kindergarten-read-alouds_21.html).
