:lol:I am getting ready to order books for TOG 2 YEAH... and I know that my older two will be in dialectic, but am having trouble placing my 8yo, soon to be 9yo. She will be in 4th grade this coming fall, and is a stong reader. I am thinking of putting her in Upper Grammar. Will this be too challenging for her? I will have her read most of her books on her own, with discussion after her.... Opinions??

The level breakdown goes:

Grades 1-3 Lower Grammar
Grades 4-6 Upper Grammar
Grades 7-9 Dialectic
Grades 10-12 Rhetoric

Hope you'll enjoy TOG!!

It shouldn't be a problem. You can always vary the amount of reading or even mix it up with some LG levels books if she is having difficulty. If you know what books you are getting go to Amazon and look inside it may give you an idea of the vocabulary and what not.

I agree with Heather. TOG is flexible and you can easily move between levels or use something you already have on hand that covers the topic. You could order the UG books and then if you encounter a book that is too challenging, head to the library for the LG selection or use an appropriate substitute. Or, if you think it beneficial, do a read aloud of the more difficult UG selection and discuss as you go.

I'll chime in -

If your dd is a good reader, definitely UG, and add in LG if you need. My 7 yo has been a little frustrated - about 80% of her TOG4 readers have been picture books that she's finished in a day. You can always lighten her history independent load if the readers are taking too much time.

My .02! Enjoy!

My 8yr old is just finishing TOG 2 in the UG level, and the literature selections have been just right - sometimes a little too easy. Some of the history selections are a little tough, even for strong readers; we wound up reading them aloud together. Others were just right, and others easy. I liked reading together better than having her read them herself anyway, because then we could discuss as we go and reinforce some concepts.

My just turned 10 yo is solidly in UG. She does like to read some of the LG books, though. :)
