Hello everyone!

A little background information here. I am Tina and my husband (Carlos) and I have three children. Our eldest daughter is 20, next would be our middle child who is 12 and then our little man who is 6. Our daughter was always in ps and I never took an active role in her education with the assumption it was the school systems job to ensure she would be properly educated. Later I found out that was the wrong assumption to make and swore I wouldn't do the same with my sons. I enrolled them both into Montessori schools.

At first our experience was awesome. I was thrilled they were in the schools they were and I took active roles in both schools, one I was very active in the PTO and the other the School Board. However politics being as they are the school was ruined the other only went to preschool so we moved on to another Montessori school both boys could go to. The biggest mistake EVER! They were left to make too many choices and missed a whole school year of education IMO.

I pulled them from school and started homeschooling. Unfortunately it was a short stint and I have to go back to work. They are now in a Private Catholic School, my youngest is doing great but my oldest son is drowning in a large pool with sharks. He is so behind the rest of them. He cannot keep up. As we all know schools can't slow the rest of the class down for one guy. Of course now they want to do evaluations and I am sure a diagnoses and an IEP will follow. I will not let that happen to him. I am trying to find ways to help him catch up in English and Spelling. He has no LA skills. He phonic skills are second to third grade at best. What recommendations do you have?

Sorry if this was long winded, lol.. I am just really frustrated!

Am I reading correctly - that your 6-year-old son reads at a second or third grade phonics level "at best"? First you said he had no LA skills, then it seems like you're saying he's a year or two ahead? :confused1: Can you clarify?

No my middle child, age 12, 6th grade. Sorry if I 'clarify. My 6 year old was insisting that I put the little smiles in my post lol. He seems to be doing very well in school. Its the 12 year old with the issues.

I would suggest you try to shore up the weak areas you've mentioned. Begin a phonics, spelling and grammar program at home. Then set aside time for reading good material, maybe at bedtime. (I assume that you have the necessary material since you've already homeschooled.)

Let his teacher(s) know what you're doing at home; they might have helpful suggestions and allow him to work on your material at school. Keep things friendly with them and check in regularly, maybe weekly. At this point your son is going to have to put in a little extra effort, but it's easier to do it now than later. You might also want to continue this during summer.

Good luck.
