He's the last homeschooled child. I put it off because he and school are such a bad fit. I am mostly worried about him socially - he doesn't fit in with kids his age. Academically? I don't think he'll do any worse than he does at home. I am actually hoping that others can teach him where I couldn't. He's a stubborn boy.:tongue_smilie:
But, he's going and just hope it won't be horrible.

Faith that your dc will adjust; and continually pray for him. It may work out better than you think!

:grouphug: My 15 yo does not typically fit in with kids her age. She cares literally nothing about the typical teen things and is very reserved. She went to school this year and is doing very well socially and extremely well academically. It was quite a relief and a little unexpected, lol.

He is doing very well academically at school and has made a few good friends.

Thanks for all the encouragement!
He wants to go in the 6th grade instead of the 7th. Dh and I have been discussing it and I will see what the school says. He struggles quite a bit with academics (his reading level is low and he is really struggling in math.) He also has a few friends in the 6th grade at the school already. Another year before high school would be good for him academically and I feel that he would be held back at the end of this year anyway. We may let him go back - I'll see what the school says.
I just hope he can adjust well.

These decisions are hard. We went the other way - putting Calvin into the year above the one that he was 'meant' to be in. He already had friends in that year, which helped a lot in his settling in, but the academic match was good too. It sounds like a similar situation to yours. I don't think one aspect without the other would have led to a sensible decision.
It turns out that there's a lot of flexibility in the Scottish system: rather than being the youngest of forty pupils, as we assumed, it turns out that there are four younger than him.

I have one of my dds starting school Monday, too. She had a tough time in 2010 with one thing after another with family, friends, and even her dog. I'm hoping this will be a positive change for her, though I'll probably have a good cry after I drop her off.
I appreciate all the encouraging replies to the OP.:grouphug:
All we can do is our best, and pray our way through it.:001_smile:

We did the same thing, for the same reasons, and it was a good decision. Now the kid is back home (!) but it is much better at 15 than 13, and I don't know what next year holds. We made both decisions mid-year, by the way.

I hope that this is the right decision for him. He'd have to go to school next year anyway when I go to work. I thought this way he would have a chance to work through some of his social and academic issues in place he will only be for 5 months. Then, he can take what he learns and start with a clean slate when we move.

So far, so good. We went this morning to enroll and there was a 2 hour wait.:001_huh: We left, went to breakfast at my uncle's restaurant, and then went back. Due to his probable LDs (and a documented low processing speed), things got a little more complicated from there.
The reading specialist is going to see him at 1:00pm to get a reading level from him and possibly do some more in depth testing to determine where his problems are (based on the reading level attained.) He'll also take a math test to help determine placement. I really think 6th grade is a good place for him, but he is 7th grade age, so we'll see where that goes.
Hopefully we'll know more this afternoon.

Please let us know how it all went when you have a chance. :bigear:
I registered dd last month so she went in today for a full first day. She's a young third grader due to a late summer birthday, so I always worried about her grade placement but from the homework I've seen she'll be okay, thankfully.
Dd said her teacher did not yell even though she could tell she was a little frustrated when some kids were misbehaving. This dd is very senstive and is going through a rough time emotionally, so having a teacher that is even-tempered, who doesn't yell or criticize, is actually the most important thing to me right now. The other kids were welcoming, too, so I'm relieved that it was a happy day for her, in fact, this is really the happiest I've seen her in a long time.

He and dh spent quite a bit of time together last night talking. It seems his biggest fears involved getting lost and being late. Those just happen to be my dh's two biggest fears as well!:lol:
He is very self-concious, so being the "new kid" could be hard, but thankfully there are a few more "new kids" starting today as well. He went on the bus (the two neighbor kids are in 6th grade, too.)
We'll see how it goes!

He survived yesterday! I think that it is going to take some adjustment - things are very fast paced for him, so it will take some time for him to learn to hurry. This is my child that takes FOREVER to do anything.:tongue_smilie:
Homework is available online, which is good because he doesn't get the concept of writing it down yet. I'll be interested to see his grades in order to guage how they grade. I didn't feel his map work in Geography was very good quality last night, but I didn't say anything yet - I want to see what his teacher says.
We'll see where everything is 9 weeks from now.;)

:grouphug: It sounds like you're on the right road since he has to go to ps next year anyway. This gives you time to sort it all out.
