Somehow they had fallen out of the nest by the door. They didn't even have feathers. I scooped them up with a ladle a put them back. My service to nature today.

We have 4 nests in our yard; 2 dove, 1 quail, and 1 cactus wren. And we have a small yard halfway taken up with a pool!

But the sad thing is that the doves in our front yard have a nest on a pillar by our front door. For some reason after the chicks hatched the parents abandoned the nest for a couple of days, whether because of the great horned owls, coyotes, or for some other reason. The chicks died, and now the mother is back and has been SITTING on her chicks for over a week! Like they're going to come back alive or something.

Isn't that sad? And kind of weird? I mean, can't she smell or sense that they are dead? I feel so badly for her. My dd thinks we need to get the baby birds out before they smell, but I think in this dry climate they'll just dessicate or something. Ewwww. Actually, I prefer to retreat to my fantasy dream land where I live most of my life and not think about that poor mama dove out my front door....

Aw! How sweet! We are awaiting the hatch of eggs from a nest in our yard also. So neat!

And the nest was empty. My husband saw the female in it last night. Oh well, there is dove nest in the tree next to vacant cardinals.

Kind of sad, I was having fun watching the birds.

I'm still trying to figure out the behavior of birds. Did something come and eat them? I'm sure the parents couldn't have moved them.

The doves will be fun to watch also, but not as pretty as cardinals!
