I was just curious about smoke detector use among the hive!

Please see my carbon monoxide poll here: http://67.202.21.157/forums/showthread.php?t=22821

We do. Multiples on each level, in fact.

But we bought our house (a 120 yr old farmhouse) last year, and you can't close without them.

I only have a single level home, that is very small (900 sq ft) and we have 3. I have one by the kids room, the kitchen, and the laundry room. I also have Co2 detectors all over.

We rent, and smoke detectors are required by law. They are hardwired with (I think) battery backup. And they are very sensitive...says the guy who has learned the hard way not to cook at high temps.

We never used to change the batteries in them.

And then we had a house fire while two of our kids were home alone, the oldest was fast asleep as he worked night shifts and slept during the day.

You can bet we keep fresh batteries in them now.

Actually, we have one in each room. It is a maintenance pain, but that's how the house came when we bought it. I guess it is what FDs recommend now.

We have a house alarm system and our smoke detectors are tied into it. If the smoke detectors go off, the security monitoring service notifies the fire department immediately. We've never needed it, but it is a wonderful thing for our peace of mind.

We have them in every room but the laundry room and kitchen. Fire can get out of control too quickly, and I like to be prepared.

Same here. We do the semi-annual testing and battery changes, but the landlord installed them.

Of course, there is no way for the city to know if you do or not, unless your house is being inspected for other reasons. When we did our house addition, we had to install more smoke detectors before we could be approved.

I would also suggest that you get 2 different types. Some are better are flames and other are better for smoldering smoke.

My dh was a fire fighter for 10+ years. He said they never had a fatal house fire where there were WORKING smoke detectors in the home.

We also have carbon monoxide detectors as well.

If you can't afford them call your local township, city hall, fire department, etc. and often they will provide them for you for free or extremely low cost.

We have a single-story house, and we have about...7 smoke detectors, I think. Our builder put one in every bedroom (4), one in the hall, one by our door to the garage, and one in our family room. They are all hard-wired into the house, with a battery backup.

Our home is a firefighter's nightmare. No good escape routes; kids sleeping alone upstairs; wood stove with an exposed pipe upstairs. And the issue with smoke detectors is that they tend to go off when the fire in the stove is really roaring. It's a pain in the arse is what it is. So, they're there, but I don't put a whole lotta stock in them, truth be told.

Yes, we have more than one. My brother is a firefighter and he even checks them when he comes over! Guess he loves us or something.:)

Here is You Tube video that my sister in law sent me. It really got me thinking about smoke dectors. And I am keeping my eye out for when these new smoke dectors come out. Does anyone know if they are available yet?

We have 3 in our single story home. There were none when we moved in and the house was built in the 70's. One works quite well. It's next to kitchen and goes off any time the gas oven is set higher than 450. It's the dinner bell ;).

One in nearly every room here. They are loud, and I give tests each quarter to make sure everyone does what they are supposed to and goes where they are supposed to. :)

We also have flash detectors near all of the gas appliances. These send an alarm call to our monitoring company in the event the temperature changes more than a certain number of degrees in a certain timespan (don't remember the specs). This is in case of a gas fire or explosion that doesn't create smoke immediately.

We have one in every bedroom. Basically everyroom in the house except the kitchen. They are also all wired together somehow so that if one goes off the whole house starts beeping.

I would like to start doing fire drills in the middle of the night. I watched a show where kids heard the alarms but didn't really know what they were and just went back to sleep.

I can see the therapy bills when they get older.
