My eldest ds has been on Vyvanse since last Friday. I have notice a big difference in his ability and attitude. I was wondering if anyone else has a child on Vyvanse and what you think about it. J has stated that he feels like he just ran a lot and is worn out. I'm not sure what to make of his description and I need to call the Dr.'s office tomorrow.

Vyvanse is very new. Trials indicated 10% of users quit taking it due to side effects. This is high compared to, say Adderall, which is closer to 2%. Here is a website with info about Vyvanse (http://www.myomancy.com/2007/05/vyvanse_the_new_1).
Is this the only ADHD medication your son has used? If so, I'd probably ask to switch to something else.

I was wondering if something would be better. What have others used with success?

Concerta has worked well for my daughter so far. The only side effect she experiences is the decreased appetite, but we have tried three different meds and she has the same with each. So far the Concerta works best for her. (she doesn't swallow pills yet even though she is 8 and we can sprinkle this in applesauce or pudding).

I understand better now what was going on with my ds. he was on Vyvanse for a while, a couple of months. Although it did help a lot, he later wanted desperately to quit it. (he is 15 and was just dxed over the summer) He says it made him have to pee and have stomachaches all the time and that kids made fun of how he acted (more serious and talking a lot, or very quiet, depending, and very slow)
Concerta was worse. That was his first med. i think we got him on too high of a dose of Vyvanse; otherwise it might have been good.
He is now taking Focalin XR and so far (Day 3) we both are pleased. But it's probably a low dose (5 mg) and may have to be higher.

I just returned from my brother's wedding and things were very smooth with ds except for his strange side effects. Dh didn't give J his medication today and J ate a ton more and he said that he didn't have the weird breathing / chest sensation. I will be calling the Doctor tomorrow and will see if we can try something else.

After calling the neurologist because of J's side effects, we have to go to a ped. cardiologist before trying any new meds. I fouind a ped cardiologist in Milwaukee who was willing to double book so that we can get in on May 7th instead of the middle of July. Has anyone else had to have a visit with a cardiologist because ADHD meds? I'm wondering what I should expect.

YEP. Our psychiatrist has my girls checked once a year. We did a basic EKG and echo and a quick visit. It was no big deal. IF something is found it might affect your med choices. If not, then you will have peace of mind.
Our psychiatrist is VERY proactive in checking these things, checking blood work, ruling out other posible issues, etc.

He also was fine on Metadate CD, but psych switched him as he felt the delivery of Ritalin would be better for DS. We do have a problem with the appetite suppression though, DS has gone from 107 lbs to 94 lbs in just a few months.
We briefly tried the patch, DS was just CRAZY on that, and also complained about the feel of it on his skin.
Strattera did nothing for him.

The new recommendation is to get an Echocardiogram when on stimulants.
