Could someone compare these for me. Is one more grammar oriented than the other? How much writing does each have? I know that LLATL has book studies and spelling too. That's a bonus, but I'm mostly concerned with the writing and grammar parts. Would either of these include enough writing for a 4th and 5th grader if we were also doing a weekly written history or science narration and a weekly letter to the grandparents? Is there enough grammar, or would that need to be supplemented?

Thanks!

It does include "some" writing in the form of dictation. We haven't gotten very far in it yet (5th gr.), but it does have spelling, grammar, dictation, copywork, etc. It is light in those areas. All are covered, but not in depth. No diagramming until 7th gr. book. I can't speak for ILL although I've heard that it does get way more in depth in grammar than PLL. I believe it also covers copywork and dictation? I've only begun to research that program . I hope somebody else chimes in w/ their opinions. As for LLATL, I add separate programs for spelling (AAS), grammar (various programs dep. on dc) and writing (again various programs). Why do I use LLATL, you ask, if I add those programs anyway? Well, b/c we like it so far! For younger grades (1-say 3), I don't necessarily feel compelled to add anything. For 4th and up...I just feel that it's not enough. That's just me. Some don't add anything. HTH

Thanks, Sue! How many days a week do you do LLATL, and how long does it take?

Anyone else?

We do it every day right now. It only takes about 15-20 min. (sometimes more) per lesson. Never more than 30 min. Each lesson is broken down into #'s w/ letters to follow so you'd have 1. a, b, c, d, etc. Each # is one day. Follow? You can spread it out over 2 wks w/out any problem I don't think if you wanted to adopt a 3x/wk schedule. I love how it's all in one book. If there is a day that we need to be on the road, they can take that one book and get grammar, spelling, reading, writing accomplished albeit "lighter", KWIM? HTH

I've heard a lot of talk about people using PLL, but not much about ILL.

Storm used ILL after PLL. ILL does include original composition as well as dictation. ILL also asks students to reconstruct fables/fairytale/stories from an outline. IIL makes a perfect pre-CW program.
