Has anyone tried this without the peanut butter? If so, how was it?

Runny.

Really, you have to have something to hold it together when it cools. Maybe some other kind of "nut" butter would work, like sunflower butter?

it couldn't be any better than that, except maybe it could be Lost! But I do love House. I just made some no-bakes last night and on the ones for the kiddos I put some chocolate chips on them. Those few were a big hit!

I make it that way all the time! I've never had it come out runny!

If it is not firm enough, it's not for lack of peanut butter. It's because it has not been boiled long and hard enough for the butter and sugar to crystalize or caramelize.

You can find the tried-and-true peanut-butter-less recipe on line. It is fabulous.

Cool! I'll have to try it and boil longer. Soft ball stage, I would guess?

Yes, that's exactly what they call it. And if you want to use a thermometer, it's 235-245 degrees.

OH! My dd likes to make those, but I try not to let her, because then I gain 20 pounds!

The verdict is in... I made them without peanut butter, boiling the stuff until the soft ball stage. And now there are none left! They were a hit. I personally would have liked them better with peanut butter. But that's fine, since I'm not supposed to be eating them anyway. The only problem was that they turned into cement in the pot because I didn't wash it right away. Now it's soaking in the sink. Hopefully it will come off!
