we have used Trail Guides to Biblical Geo but hated Trail Guides to World. Galloping the Globe is a bit too young. I dont care for BF Geo. What else should we consider??

Resources at geomatters.com or knowledgequestmaps.com... We're using and enjoying the Star-spangled state book and workbook from Knowledgequestmaps this year and it's great! I have a "Geography Resources" page on my blog. Good luck choosing!

can I ask why you hated Trail Guide to World Geo? That's on my list to buy and I agonized over which geo book to get, so I'm curious as to what you didn't like about it.

I second this. It's on my list to buy too. Why didn't you like it?

Why I hated Trail Guides to World Geo? Let me start by saying my gf loves it! In fact, what I cant stand is the reason she likes it!.

It is a series of questions that you and/or the dc have to go and hunt for the answers. It is not as "plug and play" as I wanted it to be. I found it frustrating trying to gather the books, maps, etc and search for the answers.

I was overwhelmed with it. And frankly I was already doing so many overwhelming things - SWR, CW for example. I needed Geo to be "accessable" not frustrating.

oh good - that's one of the reasons it appealed to me :D

Have you considered Mapping the World by Heart? We used it as a spine a couple of years ago and I plan to use it again with my younger kids. My dc really, really learned geographical names and places that year and have some beautiful keepsake maps. It's a barebones curriculum and I added in several other things. But I was able to purchase MTWBH used and will use it at least twice again, so it's been a good deal for us.

Something I'm going to use next year with my 2nd and 4th graders is McGraw-Hill's The Giant Book of Geography. It's not really a "curriculum", but for daily practice with map reading skills and learning U.S. geography, I think it's an excellent, inexpensive book. (I bought mine at Sam's for about $6.00.)

Both my kids have looked at it already, and they both want to start on it right now! And it IS "pick-up-and-go"!

McGraw Hill has out a Spectrum series covering geography that some really like. It combines map skills with other geography work. Their Complete Book of Maps and Geography is more about map skills, as someone already noted. Weekly Reader has out map skills booklets for various grade levels. I'm sure that Carson-Dellosa has out some geography workbooks, as well.

Check out books by Evan-Moor. I'm getting their North America book for next year. You can even preview some of their books in their entirety online.

We have been pleased with Evan-Moor's Daily Geography Practice. My son uses this completely independently - definitely grab and go.

Well, we really like Trail Guide... but some of the questions may best be combined with a trip to the library and learning how to use some basic reference materials if you don't want to buy all the resorces. I also recommend their trail note book cd.

I keep looking at the National Geographic program for cartography/geography. About 2 or 3 years ago I contacted a sales rep and they books were only available in school sized bundles. So far the only place I have found that sells them individually is Great Books Academy http://www.academybookstore.org/GBAStore/StoreFront.bok Scroll past the info on contact to the links to cartography and geography.

There is also some info on the programs under cartography on Nat'l Geos website http:///www.ngschoolpub.org/c/@ohg6UbNz52CUA/Pages/index.web

I wish I could recommend them but I haven't used or seen the NG resources--I just keep looking at them and wondering.

I am really excited about this. We are taking a year off of history studies so my younger kids will be studying geography, world cultures/religions/people etc. (My older will be doing a world view course and join some of our stuff. A Child's Geography will be our main text.

Achild'sgeography.com has samples, it may be more than you are looking for since it includes activities, but they look so great.
