The BBC will be tracking rising food prices for Six Families (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/7287793.stm) on a regular basis, something to share with your children as a possible cultural geography lesson. The article lists food items that these families usually buy (dahl and pulse in India, corn tortillas in Guatemala, etc.) This might be an interesting way to facilitate an economic discussion on the homefront.

Wow! I am glad you shared this - I have it bookmarked now to keep checking the stories of these six families. I am glad we do not live in Egypt!!! Rationing!
