If doing science 5 days a week, will it actually take a year? I'm thinking for 4th and 5th grades.
I was wondering if, for the 4th quarter , we could squeeze in a little microscope/microbiology?

You could definitely squeeze something else in. We do Astronomy and Botany in 5th grade at our homeschool followed by Zoology I and II in 6th grade. I think that the Elem Apologia books can easily be done in one semester since each book has only 13-14 lessons. We do all of the notebooking exercises and experiments, and we don't feel rushed. My boys learn a lot, and they really enjoy this series. You could draw each lesson out over 2 weeks, but I never saw an advantage to that approach.

I think you could definitely add something if you are doing science every day. That is a certainty. I love the Apologia books and wish we had found them earlier! :) I just got the Zoology III and it looks fantastic. We are working through ZII. :)

Yes.
I have a schedule written out, on my blog, and we did it 5 times a week and it took ~20 weeks (give or take a couple).
Umm, I just remember I made corrections to that schedule and just need to re-post it, but I can't do that till later today. . . (the "old" schedule is still on there, just not "corrected").

If you are doing science 5 days a week, you will finish Botany in less than a year. Have you seen the book yet? I *usually* spread the reading over 3 days, followed by written narration or notebooking and any Try This! exercises. The 4th day is spent on the experiment. It's a very manageable schedule. There are 14 chapters (I think; my copy of Botany is loaned out) and with 4th and 5th graders doing science every day, you'll probably get a chapter a week done.
Have fun! It's a great book!

We're actually doing it in a semester and we don't do science every day. We are skipping a few things that we had covered in the fall and not doing every single activity listed. I think it's a very flexible book and can be stretched or condensed as needed.

It doesn't take us that long for Kindergarteners--gifted Kindergarteners, but Kindergarteners nevertheless. We're going to total out at 28 days of half hour lessons actually spend *on the book* for our Apologia books. The whole unit will be 15-18 weeks, but that's because I'm adding tons of other stuff. For fourth and fifth grade, it should be easy to do it in less than half a year.

I just wanted to thank you for your schedules!!!!
I will be using a few of them next year, tweaking them, of course, to fit out family's needs. But you are making it SO much easier on me!!!
Also, I've been wondering about your older child's sample daily schedule you have posted. About how much time did your child spend on school when that schedule was being used?
My 14yo ds will have a similar schedule and I'm just wondering *about* how long his day will be.
Oh, and another question. My ds hasn't done Lightning Lit's grade 7. Do you recommend we do that before the grade 8? Or does it really matter? He'll enjoy the books in both years. In fact, he's already read one book in both of those years (Alice in Wonderland in gr. 7 and Hobbit in gr. 8). I won't make him reread those books, but we'll just do the activities that go with them.
Thanks,
Greta:)

We general do two of these types of sciences each year. I don't think you would have a problem with what you are planning. :001_smile:
