I wanted to double check our wording because the phrase is going on my daughter's diploma. Our school name is unofficially "Eagle's Nest Academy" and since there is a place for a motto, we've decided it should be, "Preparing to Soar" but in Latin.

We have "Ad Altivolum Parare" Yes? No?

how often she checks in. Keep waiting! Someone on these boards has done more than our two years of h.s. Latin!

I sent this over to dd. Here are her suggestions.

Hm. I'd probably say that 'Ad subvolandum paremus' would be better. Subvolare means 'fly up'. Even if they want to keep altivolus (I can only find it in our dictionary as an adjective), they'd need to use the gerundive. That is what you use with ad to express purpose and paremus is subjunctive, which would make it 'let us prepare'.

Another way to look at it would be "Preparing" = present participle and "To Soar" = infinitive. In Latin, Parans subvolare.

(going back to my kiddos since they're done with lunch...)

Bumping and hoping for more replies. Dd is great at Latin to English, but not so hot at English to Latin. I'm just hopeless :)

Thanks for the replies thus far!
